Hi, I was confirmed by another pysch. dr to have ADHD. Jeez, I almost 40!!! I have been different ever since I can remember. I have been the odd person out. I will be starting adderall XR tommorrow. I am a little concerned about it since I am an recovering alcoholic (sober since 1998), but my dr. said it would be okay. This is the first doctor I have ever told everything to. I have lied and bull sh**ted my whole life. I wanted everyone to think I was in control while I was getting more out of control everyday. I have lost jobs, friendships, husbands because I cannot focus, prioritize or follow-through. I have also had many different dx's throughout the years---depressions, bi-polar, and such.
I found this site because I was surfing at work (bored, ya know) and starting reading the threads.
How long do you think it will take for the medicine to start working? My dr. says others will notice its effects on me before I will and it will happen pretty fast.
Just curious.
Thanks

Hello! And welcome! ;D Yes, the benefit of stimulants is that they are effective immediately. A downfall is the side-effects in some people. Did your doctor discuss the possible side effects with you? I'm sure he did. Just remember to wait it out for a few days if you start suffering from them. Oftentimes, people only experience them for the first few days. As far as being a recovering alcoholic, I have never heard anyone complain of setbacks due to their meds. If your doctor is aware of your history, I'm sure he would not have prescribed it if he thought it might cause problems. So don't let it worry you! Again, glad to see you here and I hope to see you around. I think you'll find us an accepting and entertaining group of people.

Diana, sorry I am so late in responding to this post.
Welcome aboard!
I agree with jdmom about the stims and how fast acting they are. And your doctor is right about others noticing first, but you should see it pretty quickly as well.
The meds all react differently and that includes different side effects, so if this one does not work, there are others to try. Just make sure you let your doctor know what is going on with you.
I have quite a few adult friends who have stories similar to yours. When they were finally diagnosed with ADHD, the pieces fell into place. They are doing nicely now and you will too.
Good luck and you are in my prayers.
Keep us posted on your progress!
