"What?, I didn't hear what did you say?"
A common phrase I have spoken over and over and over since I can remember. The usual reply is, "Gosh, I just told you like 3 seconds ago, are you not listening or paying attention to anything I just said?" or my personal favorite, "Oh forget it, your so frustrating, I have to repeat myself several times before you get it, just not worth it".
Ever hear those words?
Funny huh? No? What do you mean not funny? I laugh my butt off each time I hear those type of responces to my "What? I didn't hear you." questions.
"But doesn't that piss you off?", ya it used to before I realized I was ADHD. I used to get upset, angry, and depressed thinking something was wrong with me.
Well DUH, I have ADHD something is wrong with me, and its not totally my fault!
I have spent the last 6 years together with my fiance, Sarah, one day we may even get married, but that is not high on my list right now, LOL, fellow ADHD people can laugh at this, LOL.
She loves me so much, and has the patience of God in her to put up with a man like me, hell I would have ran myself over with my own car after 24 hours with myself unmedicated and untreated. WOW!
Forget about ever getting your point through to me in one sentence, hell might as well just repeat yourself at least no less then 3 times to get it through to me.
See I have the attention span of nothing. I measure my attention span in Nano seconds, basically really darn fast.
"What?"
"What did you say again?"
and "What I didn't hear you?"
My permantly imbedded responce to anything anyone tells me. Even when i actually hear them and register what they said.
In my nano second of attention span, I can remember an entire vacation trip, remember that I forgot to call someone important at work that day, invent a new way to power a car, and fully scan the entire room I am in for anything out of the ordinary, fully expecting a car to crash into teh room, or an earthquake to hit and I have to quickly become the hero and save everyone in the house, or rush outside to help rescue someone form a car accident. All this in a nano second in my mind.
No wonder I never heard Sarah tell me that we had to be ready by 1pm so we are not late to the show. After I come back to reality a nano second later, I see that she has said something, and is checking to see if I heard her, so i reply, "What?".
Let the fireworks begin! Folks we have an amazing show prepared for you! Watch as Rob gets blasted into orbit with the ever dull "Your so frustrating" explosion, followed, by the new and improved "Did you hear anything I just said? bang, and finished up with the tried and true "Ah Forget it, you are never listening or paying attention to anything I say, no wonder we are always late, and you screw things up".
Ya its funny!
I love my mind, even though at times it makes it hard for me to work, or do normal things in daily life, but it sure as hell provides a lot of entertainment if you let it.
So I laugh! It's better then being depressed all the time, LOL.
Every time I space out, zone out, travel all over the world in a nano second, or I'm off inventing a new computer system, and I miss what someone says to me, here is what I do.
"Ok wait a minute, I have to put you on hold! Ya I know the comet is rushing towards earth and is going to hit in 10 minutes, I still have plenty of time to stop it, you have to hold, Sarah is trying to tell me something, and I jsut missed it, and if I don't stop and listen to her, the comet is the last thing you will be worrying about, understand? Good! "Ok Sarah what did you say again? Sorry the president can be so rude ya know?"
Sarah looks at me all weird eyed and laughs, and tells me what she was saying, and I get it.
Laughter has so much power to seriously calm down a potential fireworks explosion by your spouse, or children and parents. ADHD is not always bad, it just needs to be tamed. Its ok to let your mind loose every now and then, but without control, structure, and effort, your mind can run away with you and not be very helpful in your life.
So the next time your spouse or your parents are telling you something, put the alien invasion on hold, take a break from solving cold fusion, and come back for a moment, laugh about it together and you will hear what is being said, then return to your crazy world, knowing that the world is safer yet again, and that you have changed history forever, even if its only in your mind.
