ok, what to do? my dh is a pack rat. and i'm not talking about little hunks of cheese. at last count, there are 24 wheeled vehicles in our backyard (in various stages of repair/disrepair). cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, boats, a van, and a dumptruck...yes, a dumptruck. i can't count the accessories, tools, parts, etc. that go with them. i'm glad that he has a hobby, and i'm glad that his knowledge keeps our cars running without repair shop bills. to be fair, i've got my share of smaller cheese stacks, too. butttttttttt..........where to draw the line? or should i not draw it at all? opinions and suggestions more than welcome! 1mom

I think that you should buy him another old piece of junk and have it towed into the yard and say, "I got this just for you!! Happy Easter!!" I'm sure he'd be delighted!!
I once read that if a person has twenty hats and you're wondering what to buy them -- buy them a hat. Obviously they like them, or they wouldn't have twenty already.

LOL Hoodunnit!! ... and 1Mom I can relate (although not on such a scale!) ... my dh too has hoards of tools and boxes of various screws and nuts and bolts ... and if he ever actually NEEDS one he can't find it because there are way too many to rummage through! ... He also has this terrible habit of going to other people's garage sales/boot sales etc. and coming home with OTHER PEOPLE's junk to add to our already over-junked garage! ... and he PAYS for this junk!! ... As to what to do ... I personally am the OPPOSITE to "junk collector" ... in fact there is a true story where I threw away some "ugly little bottles" which were then featured (identical!) on an Antiques programme ... and valued at over £3000 each !! ... Another occasion I threw away an "old raincoat" ... How was I to know he had put all his German Marks (several hundred pounds worth) into the pocket of that old thing??!! ... So I have certainly "overdone" my "throwing out" on occasions ... So based on that I have to say "Be careful with what you perceive as junk!! ;D)

thank you, hoodunnit. are you hinting for an easter hat? if not a hat, then what do you collect (books?)?
girls, i can relate! i need to add a footnote: mr wheels gets aggrevated at MY "junk" (i have 13 teapots on the hutch shelf), but cannot see his HUGE collectionS of *stuff*. like anne, he has been known to throw away MY antiques ("old junk") because he thinks they are trash taking up space. (now, how can he even think this when the huge backyard is bearly a footpath between vehicles?!?!?!?) he once threw away a pair of antique wooden blinds. burnt 'em up in a woodpile. is that right?

No, that's not right. Have you ever told him that he needs to be a better communicator?

1mom don't let my DH know where you live.lol He is a machanic and helps run a salvage yard. Our back yard looked the same. I have finally gotten them moved to the back of the field. I am so bad about keeping things. We just bought a 32x80 doublewide this summer. And it is full already. I keep thinking well maybe I will need this one day and it stays forever.

dear stew, why don't you move on down here. sounds like we'd be perfect neighbors. we'll figure out how to buy some sort of land to keep the bigger "collectables" stored out of sight. maybe hoodunit will come and mediate our discussions and we can all be resolved. or is that absolved? LOL 1mom

Good to know it's not just my husband yes, I ahev my stuff too, but at least my stuff is put away. Opps, ok, I look around and it's not all put away, BUT it's not laying across the dining room table like the arrows that belong to the bow that is sitting on the chair in the living room waiting to be turned down (like it has been for a month) Sorry, not much help, we both have too much junk around here, I don't want to be theitcalling the kettle black. k, i think it must be one of the more prominent symptoms. i have a good friend who's dh has 9 lawnmowers--some over 20 years old. everytime she has a fit about them, he says, "but they're good! i might need them one day'. LOL. did i mention that their whole yard is about 30X30 (feet)? teehee. 1mom

um, we remember, we have to weedwack around the broken mower that was going ot be fixed, then replaced, then fixed, then replaced........if he could make up ur mind, we'd be in good shape And our yard might be about 10ft across by i'd say about 40ft back......not counting the flower beds and tree that take up part of it. Kaiti One day I'll own a NEW Lawn Mower-I hope

My DH is a pack rat also, but he is maintance mech. so if it is not Case Red and has cow poop stuck somewhere on it he is lost. He works on the diesel things, and I take care of the car, thank goodness!!
He is one of those guys who puts all his nuts and bolts in his pockets and I have a canister next to the washing maching for them, at last weighing it was 37 lbs! I am going to bring it to the salvage yard and turn it in for scrap metal when it hits 40 lbs and buy something nice!! ;D
Anyhow, would he compromise, maybe move his stuff away from the house a little and put up a nice wooden fence? Sort of like, "out of sight, out of mind?" Then you'd both get a little of what you want. On the other hand then you'd have to get him to build the fence and there is probably a good chance you'd only end up with 1/2 of it!! I know I would.....
