Hey all of you electronic savvy folks, could you tell me how the mp3 players work? I guess the question I have is, is there a way to record your real cd's onto the player to take along? Or is it strictly a download songs from the internet thing? Thanks, Miles

Riley just got one today as a belated bday gift. From what the lady said we could put his cd in the computer and download the songs~~haven't tried that. He did download songs from the internet. I puchased a gift card from wal mart and he can download from their website for 88 cents each song and just enter in the pin code from the card.

Michael says... it depends on what brand you get. Some you can only download, some you have to transfer the entire CD, some you can pick certain tracks on the CD.
DH downloads the $.88 regularly from walmart. I was in Staples yesterday and they have a worksheet "compare MP3 Players" and it has like 30 different players.
The issue is the transfer software. Microsoft media software which comes with the operating system (the computer) will translate audio format to MP3 format.
Tell you what, Miles, if you have more questions, you can IM me through the site and I'll have Mr. DJ himself answer your questions, or you can e-mail at my comcast address.
We have bought a couple of "cheap" MP3's at Walmart, and they worked really well, but only lasted 6 or 9 months...
We are now thinking about upcoming Birthdays and Christmas too! So, I think we will be do more research as well!

Oh Laurie don't tell me that that is where we bought Riley's mp3 player. We bought an RCA one because I like that namebrand and because it was windows compatable. What namebrand did you buy? I like Riley's so much that I want to buy one for my car because dh won't let me install a cd player but I do have a cassette/radio and I can use the cassette hook-up to the mp3 player (tried it with Riley's yesterday) and it is small enough it will sit on the dash nicely.

*whistles innocently* This is the program that I use to rip CDs. Or, you can always go here and search for "ripper." Also, many MP3 players come with software that will do it.

Now, I dont want to do anything illegal or nothing, just want to take the songs I like along with me and not carry the big CD player I have. Now look at me whining.... the CD player I have is too big and heavy.... Time for a reality check. I am not sure what I want anymore. I want to play them on my stereo, and take them with me. Maybe it would just be cheaper to download them and burn a cd for the stereo. This could be fun Miles

Yes, we had RCA's, but did I mention that Michael used his as a hackey sack???
That might explain why it didn't last too long!

Just a thought about downloading stuff from the shared music places on the internet ... Sam haD been doing this for AGES ... and then in the paper it said that families were getting bills for £2500 (around $4000) because the music companies were hitting back !! ... Soooooo ... we now have an account with Napster which costs us £9.99 per month but means he ~(and I!) can LEGALLY download as much music as he (We) want(s) .... Kazaa on the other hand was a NO-NO and "could" have landed us with a horrendous bill!! Also .. Napster as well as being totally legal is MUCH better quality!!

I have a creative zen mini. Much like an ipod, but actually rated better. Ipod is very picky and you have to use itunes to get music. With the creative, I can use any of the download sites from the free stuff to walmart, napster, etc. I can also rip music from CD's onto my computer and then upload it to the creative. The only problem with this product is the lack of accessories. You can buy ipod stuff everywhere. I had to look to ebay to find an arm band carrier that wasnt huge or overly expensive.

Is the creative a one piece unit? Patrick has this idea that he wants one that has a drive separate from the file storage. That just sounds like an extra moving part that can get broken.
