In attempt to figure out what's broken in me, and try to get it fixed, I had my first ever counselling session with a psychologist yesterday. His initial assessment was that I suffer from dysthymic depression (probably for decades). I asked him whether he thought ADD might play a part in my problems, and he agreed to test me specifically for ADD. So now I go back in about 10 days for a four-hour battery of tests, etc.
I'm not really sure I care what the diagnosis is....as long as it is correct, and I can start trying to put my life on track. The doc admitted that it could be tricky to determine whether my inability to function properly is due to the dysthymia, or whether the dysthymia has been affected or even caused to some degree by my inability to function due to ADD. But he feels that the ADD testing will be able to rule out or confirm whether I do have ADD. And he is confident that I would respond favorably to treatment one way or another.
I was just wondering what experience anyone else had with Dysthymic Disorder (mild chronic depression) and how it relates to ADD? Mis-diagnosis? Complications with meds, treatment, etc? Any advice would be great!
Thanks, so much.
