Hello Everyone! I'm new to this forum and very excited about learning! I am about to repaint my sons' room. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea how paint color affects ADHD. I'm thinking 4 different color flourescent walls and my husband is thinking no way! If you can't see my vision, that's fine but I'd really like to know if it would make the children more hyper ! I'd appreciate any personal experiences or study information you may have on this. Thanks, Cassie

Hello Cassie.... I'm sorry to disapoint you because I do not know the answer to your question... but I did want to take a minute and welcome you. Yoou said you were new here so you needed an official welcome! I hope you find the answer to your question and lots more here. This is a very supportive, family oriented place. Hope you stick around and join us. I also look forward to the responses. Very good question you posted. I know my daughter has different colored walls at her dad's and I have never heard anything bad about how it affects her there. The only thing I have ever heard is that blue and yellow are calming while red is not. No help, huh?

Camismom, Thank you for the warm welcome! You had a tidbit for me....blue and yellow calm while red does not! That's a starting point. I do appreciate the information. I'll just look forward to more of it! Cassie

Cassie- I remember seeing on-line somewhere (although I do not remember the souce) that GREEN and BLUE are both colors that are reported to have a calming effect on those of us with ADHD. That could be why a good walk out in nature does a body good. (interesting to note that both are favorite colors of mine) As far as the flourescent factor, I'm not sure how that plays into it. Sounds cool to me, though!

Cassie and welcome to our site!!! As for your question I´ve never heard about that, other than the basic´s that you´ve already got from camismom and songwriter; blue and green are smoothing, red is not. Interesting thought from Paul, about nature´s colouring, I´ve never come to thing about that, but do find nature so relaxing ... I´l be interested to read more of this....

:)Hello and welcome! I like the blue and green ideas. I don't know for sure but I have a feeling that flourescent or neon might be agitating. Anything that is calming or happy is good. We have a border of sweet looking horses in a field in dd's room. The background color is a blue green that she picked out. I would say to let your son pick out colors and design with in the spectrum of calming things.

Yes I agree that I think neon and bright would be unsettling ... I am not adhd but I can remember as a kid having a picture in my bedroom (my mother still has it ) of three little rabbits in a field ... the picture is all "natural" colours and I used to feel very calm looking at this picture .... whereas something bright and "busy" or "loud" in colour is unsettling even to a non-adhd'er .... Just an extra thought!!

Welcome Cassie! I am trying to think about this. Just in the last few days I read somewhere about the color thing, I'll have to see if my ADHD mind can remember where and get the info. to you. It may have been the new issue of Guideposts. I'll look later when I go upstairs. I know just before we moved south from Vermont, my son decided to paint his bedroom... flourescent lime green. That might not have been so bad, but the carpet was rose pink, there was a flourescent yellow frame on the door mirror, and the ceiling fan was what I affectionately called "Emergency Orange". I wanted to put flouro. window blinds on too, but the realtor talked me out of it (he was asst. fire chief, I was asst. ambulance chief!). One day just for fun, my DS, then 9, dumped a bunch of black marbles on the floor... it looked like a watermelon! Michael was started on Adderall about 2 months later. I don't know if there was any relationship to the bright colors, or if it was a result of the tumult of moving 400 miles from home at Christmas, but we sort of lost him after that time. Now, my house has all bright white walls... and he is somewhat more tranquil. Well, I will let you know when I find the info about colors. Just thought you might enjoy the experience of my technicolor bedroom. BTW, it was a below ground level room, and when he didn't close the blinds at night, the front yard glowed an eerie green when his light was on! Welcome! Laurie

According to the article in Guideposts magazine, January 2005 issue
An article written by Sharon hanby-Robie of Lancaster, PA who is a 20 yr. interior designer...
"Studies have shown that read makes your heart beat faster and heightens your sense of taste and smell. Blue is calming- it slows your pulse and breathing. Pink has a tranquilizing effect. That's why holding cells in some jails are painted bubblegum pink... Green refreshes. Yellow enhances concetration (think legal pads or Post-it notes."

You guys are outstanding and thorough! I appreciate all of your comments, stories, and research! I'm thinking blue, green, and yellow. I want to make a really fun design though. How about a blue background with big splats of green and yellow? Or half of the room in blue and half in green with wide yellow stripes all around the room? Just something different, anyone have some fresh fun ideas? Thanks again for everything, Cassie

Not that this would be a good idea for the attentiveness, but I thought about a big checker board Don't know if that would distract or mesmerise, like those puzzles, I usually get lost in checker boards thinking of different patterns, so it might or might not be a great idea. Keeping thinking

I like the 'splat' idea, although you should really consider yellow as the background with splats of blue and green (the contrasting effect will be better, I think. It would be worth your time to 'experiment' using posterboard and markers. (Try not to 'overlay' colors as this changes their tone and ruins markers.) Come to think of it, I bet you could use flourescent posterboard and 'cut out the splat designs' and paste or better yet, 'paint ' on the computer.

I love the checkerboard idea! I bet it wouldn't be so bad if I made the checks LARGE!!! I'm gonna throw that idea around in my mind and see what I can come up with. Yellow background.....you are exactly right. With a blue background, the green wouldn't show up as well. Let me think on these............. Keep 'em comin! Thanks again...to all of you! Cassie

I like the cherckerboard idea as well... but can't figure out if it would be too distracting for an ADHDr. Need more input from our members that are ADHD themselves.
A few years back (Cami's tenth birthday) we redid Cami's room. She is a huge horse lover, so we found a border that has horses in a field of wild flowers. We put the border in the middle of the walls and painted green below the border to match the green of the grass on the border. Above the border we painted sky blue and then painted white puffy clouds over that. She has green carpet the same color as the wall to match (courtesy of her carpet-laying father). There is a splash of some mauvy-pink in there as well. Funny, I never thought of it at the time but I guess we did well with colors. Her room is her sanctuary.
What age did you say your son is again? I'll have to think on some ideas. You may try looking at some of the web-sites lthat feature room re-dos.... like HGTV or Trading Spaces.
Good luck!
