New Job

I got a new job today! It has been a lot time since I have had a job that I get a paycheck for.
I am going to work at a bar in town, bartending. It isn't a dream job, but it forces me to talk to people face to face and I need more of that. It is also something that I am good at b/c I am one of those bartenders that sits and listens to everyone's problems, so everyone usually likes me. I have always bartended for my in-laws but they never paid me so this is really cool!!
Plus, the hours work out perfect. I won't have to get a sitter for the kids b/c it is at night, and since I don't sleep much anyway I might as well do something with my time. Actually, I got the job b/c since gas and milk have gone up so much in price we have really been cutting out all of our fun stuff to save a little money so this will be really nice.
Wish me luck...at worst I'd have to quit if it interferes too much at home, but it is only 2 weeknight and every other Saturday night. ;D

Thanks guys. I know it sounds silly, but it really means a lot to me to be able to contribute to the family income. Somehow it makes me feel more useful. I know being a SAHM is important, and many women would love the chance, but I also don't have to keep telling people "I don't work" or "I just stay home." I know I probably should be proud of that, but sometimes it is hard when all of your friends are like engineers and professional people. I guess it is good for my self-esteem.

Hi tinkerbell. Good luck to you with this. I have a retail store, so I am often at the cash register, but I suppose that being a cashier in a Sam's Club would be more pressure. But I'm sure you can do it. Maybe most of it involves scanning with a wand.

You know what I just thought of? If it is the scanning, practice at the self check out line when you go shopping anywhere if it is available. Sam's club, is that the same as Walmart, but bigger right? WalMart here has a self check out, so if you have one in your area, you could try that. But if it's a regular old cash register, they are easy to figuer out once you get the hang of it. I used to wait on people when I'd go over to the store and they were backed up. Advantage of the small town thing. Good luck tinkerbell!!!! I'm sure you'll be fine!!!!!

Shelly, being a cashier can be fun. I was one at a hardware store, and a bank teller for many years so I have had a chance to work with money. I really liked it.
Checking people out takes a little practice. After a week you will be in the swing of it and then it is like a routine. Think of the register as a keyboard, I am sure you have your's at home memorized, and in no time you will have the one at the store memorized also. Just give yourself a chance and a little confidence and you'll do great at it.
I also admire that you want to help your hubby out a bit. I always laugh that I really don't make much money, but it pays more that I ever thought I would. In fact, now that I am good at my job and know a few people, I always joke with DH at the end of the week and we figure out what we each made per hour (he is on salary, and I made cash plus tips) and see who has the better job for the week. It is also really nice to get out and see a few people my own age. For a while there I was starting to think that I was a kid too!!
