Hi! I'm new to this site...I have a 10 year old son with ADHD. He is a great kid! We've learned a lot about ADHD in the past year since his diagnoses. Still foggy on some things and some days are more of a struggle than others as I'm sure you all know! I need your help...I am currently taking a child psychology class in college and I am giving a 40 minute presentation tomorrow evening (12-13-04) in class for my final on ADHD. I thought it would be interesting to do some sort of interactive activity with the class to let them get a feel for what it is like for kids with ADHD to focus, sit still, ect. I am having a brain block and can't think of anything! Does anyone have any thoughts? If so, please share them asap!! Thanks!

Hi Mommy94 and welcome! Your presentation sound´s interesting, it sure is good to spread the knowligde of adhd. But how to help you I guess you cant; turn on few telly´s(out loud of course), play music from few radios, have a guy dropping thing´s on the flooer and get some people wondering around the room talking all the time etc etc . I guess that would give quite clear picture Even if I cant help you with your tomorrow assignment, I want to say; welcome and hope you´ll find this place worth looking through, hope to see you araound. Good luck for tomorrow

mommy94 and WELCOME!! Just building on what finnmom said ... and not forgetting that adhd is apparently like having 10 different radio stations going on in your head and not being able to tune into any of them .... could you perhaps just for a minute or two get everyone to talk to everyone ... i.e. EVERYONE talking AT THE SAME TIME ... BUT at the same time as all talking together (about anything they choose) they also need to try and "concentrate" on what "everyone else is saying" ... ? I think this would give a pretty good indication of what it is like to have adhd ... I wish you LOTS OF LUCK for your talk and hope to see you around here!! ... Please let us know how it goes!

I am going to look for the old link I once had with a visual presentation on this subject. I know that my sons teacher wrote on the board last week during a test: "There are 20736 holes in each tile of the ceiling, please get back to your test." He then walked around the class and tapped the shoulder of each student not focused, pointed to the board. Another day he wrote, "They say I have ADHD, but I think... oh, look! A bird just flew by the window!" And then he did the same thing. Perhaps you can put on the several different radio stations loudly around the room, and then give directions to the class to attempt to draw a complex picture... the one I remember seeing had a tic tac toe type board with different pictures on it... the teacher told the kids to put a green X on the picture above the yellow bird, put a red O on the picture to the right of the blue car, put an orange X on the picture opposite the yellow X, ... And didn't allow time for any questions or stopping to think about what the directions were, just rapid fire directions requiring multiple steps to chose the right color, the right picture, and the right shape to put on the picture, all while there was a lot of loud outside distractions. As I said, I will try to find the link, but it is something like that, and if you create it yourself, there can be no accusation of plagiarism either. HERE IT IS! www.pbs.org/wgbh/misunderstoodminds/attention.htmlLet us know how it goes! Laurie
