Do you have any advice on what to do with a 17-year-old ADHD-boy with anger management issues?

I guess it would depend on the issues. Our high schools have anger management classes. Is that available to you? Also, how long has he had these issues?

He's in the peer support group at his high school. One of their sessions was on anger management. It seems to me that he might have actually made a presentaion on it. He has had these issues almost all his life. But what you know is one thing and what you do is another thing. Last week he bought a machete and has the idea that I'll let him have it underneath the front seat of the car!!

What about biofeedback? Or it may be called neurofeedback? There are some interesting results given in Dr. Amen's books about including this in a treatment plan. Of course he would have to realize that it takes a lot of effort and a willingness to work at it before results could be seen. They have some programs available that are disigned for young people that make it fun. From what I've read it looks like a good thing.
Also, just a thought.... I would have his homocystine blood level checked. This can and does affect a persons temperment. Since it is something he has had all his life I would be suspicious. Blood histamine is lowered by using 800mcg folic acid, 50mg Vitamin B6, 1200mcg Vitamin B12, and 250mg of Choline (from Lecithin). The Choline is optional but in my opinion should be included. My husband has an anger problem and it took years to figure out what would help. Now at least 15 books later I think I have figured it out. It works for us. No side effects either.

Thank you ohmama. I never thought to look at it that way.

I would also check out any anger management groups throughly. Some only relate to relationships between 2 people, like domestic abuse. Others are more broad. Also, before he starts a group I would attend a session or 2 myself. Sometimes in a group situation people tend to feel bad about themselves b/c too many others know their most personal feelings. Sometimes too much info is a bad thing. If he were my child I think I would get the blood checked and then talk to a one on one counselor first. Sorry, but I am anti-group, problems to long to list....

Just another thought.....I don't know if your son is on medication or not, but anger/aggression can be a side effect of many of them. We used stimulants for about a year, then Strattera for 6 months and have been off meds for about 2 months, and much of anger issues we were seeing have virtually disappeared. Good luck with whatever you try.
