I am wondering how long I should give him to adjust. I dont want it to be awful for him coming off the meds. We go in tuesday and talk to his nuerologist. I am pushing to take him off med completely unless his tics are uncontrolable. Right now his is taking concerta 72 mg once in the morning. He is great with the meds but morning and night are awful and unbearable. I need him to be more steady through the day and I hope taking him off meds will help. He is also not eating again. Any suggestion? Kelly

kelly -
If and when you do take him off meds - do it on a weekend or over a long weekend if you can. One of the things I have noticed if I don't give DS his meds is that it causes a spike in hyperactivity, impulsiveness, etc. - far beyond what is "normal" - it levels off after a few days - but it is actually in the side effects for abrupt stopping of meds. We had a health insurance issue earlier this summer and he didn't have meds for two weeks. The first week was a living nightmare! But the second week was back to his "normal" state of energy. (DS is on 20 mgs Ritalin LA) - I will say that coming off of the Ritalin LA was far worse that coming off of the Metadate CD.
How were his tics before the meds? It seems that methylamphetamines seem to aggravate tics - his tics may improve if off the meds. Something to ask the nuerologist!

I agree with eaccae, it should be done when you can have the greatest amount of control, and he isn't required to have much of a schedule.
I don't know a lot about meds, but just think of it as the last day of school when the kids bust out of the schools all wild and stuff. It's going to happen, but you need to make sure the energy is directed in a positive manner.
Good luck

We homeschool so I am not worried about his that. I will not expect much of him for a couple of days. I am really hoping this works. I am starting to panic. I dont know if I will be able to handle him with no meds at all. We will see.

You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!! Find his niche and run with it. I think that everything is a lesson, so make sure you write down everything for you to count for the home schooling. Wishing the teacher luck

Well it did not go as planned. Logan has a major meltdown the monday night. As a result I did not even mention to his doctor about taking him off meds completely. Oh well. Maybe next time I will feel better about it.
I still have Logan on the fish oils and mag. Thank you for your support.

Aloha, We are going to visit the doctor and have Tyler start taking Meds I told my husband that when summer is around I would like to start the Feingold Diet and take him off meds. I am going to tell the doctor of my plans. I have to find the foods and non-food items on our list. So starting in the summer will give me time to start shopping and buying these things. Especially since I may have to mail order alot of these things. Do you know if it is okay to still give Fish Oil and Magnesium while on any type Meds? I am not sure what they will give us. Mahalo Nui Loa (thank you very much), Ninjya Girl

I'm not aware of any interactions between fish oil or magnesium and stimulant medications. Once you know which medication you'll be using, you can check for precautions and interactions at www.rxlist.com/
