WOndered if anyone just gives the magnesium at night? It seems she has so many pills she is taking in the morning. I give her another omega at night also. Also, how much mg's is the optimal for omegas? SHe is 47 #'s. Thanks LIsa

Hi Lisa -- Lots of people like to give magnesium at night because they've found that it helps with sleep. My son takes his in the morning and evening. You can do whatever works. I like to split the dose because magnesium can cause stomach upset and giving half at a time reduces that problem. Also, it's water-soluble so excess will be urinated out and there's less excess with a split dose. At your daughter's weight, if you're looking for a maintenance dose (that is, you aren't dealing with magnesium deficiency, just general supplementation needs) then you ought to be giving 150mg of elemental magnesium. If you are dealing with a deficiency, then the therapeutic dose is 300mg. That's a lot, and you'd probably have to work up to it gradually to avoid causing a stomach ache.
Keep in mind that magnesium oxide is not very bioavailable. You're better off using any other type. The most bioavailable is magnesium chloride, which your body can directly utilize. But anything other than magnesium oxide is a good bet. Check that you are dosing based on the elemental magnesium content, and not the weight of the magnesium compound.
