I have been giving my son fish oil 1,000 mg a day. I have read about flaxseed oil. What works better? Any suggestions?

According to recent clinical evidence, many ADHD children lack an enzyme necessary to build the long chain essential fatty acids from their shorter precursors. The reason this is important is that the brain MUST HAVE it's DHA and EPA (these are the long chain fatty acids). Flax oil contains only short chain precursors. If your child falls into the large group of ADHD kids who are unable to metabolize the long-chains from the short ones, then giving flaxseed oil will do absolutely no good at all. Fish oil contains DHA and EPA ready for the brain to use. So I definitely recommend using fish oil.
Your dose of 1,000mg per day sounds a little low. You may want to consider doubling it. Of course, this depends on your son's age. If he is under 5, then he would probably do best on a small high-DHA capsule that contains at least 240mg DHA. If he's older, you want to shoot for 480mg DHA and 720mg EPA daily (this is the amount that has been used successfully in clinical trials). Generally this will require at least two large capsules...or even more, depending on the brand you are using.
