Well, if you were looking at huge magnesium tablets, then my guess is you were looking at magnesium oxide. Don't use magnesium oxide. Not only are the tablets big enough to choke tyranosaurus rex, but it's not a very bio-available form of magnesium. Get anything else and it will be smaller and better. The types we've had the best luck with are KAL magnesium glycinate and BlueBonnet "magnesium 400", but there are plenty of good ones out there. Chelated minerals are the most readily used by your body, but they also tend to be the most expensive. A therapeutic dose of magnesium is calculated by multiplying body weight in pounds times 6. A maintenance dose -- once there is no deficiency -- is half that amoutn. So for your daughter, your target dose would be 246mg. You're not going to find a 246mg capsule, so don't worry about it. You can either go up to 250mg or down to 200mg, and either way you'll be in the ballpark. My personal recommendation would be that you begin with a low dose, at about 100mg. The upper tolerable limit for a child of 6 is 110mg per day, and if you exceed that you run the risk of causing stomach ache and diarrhea. If this happens, it generally resolves itself within a couple of days, or goes away when you reduce the dose. You can start at 110mg and work up to 200mg...or if you are not comfortable exceeding the upper limit, you can supply the remainder from dietary sources. 8 brazil nuts will make up the difference!
