We've tried everything to try and get some weight on Brock. Last year when we switched to Straterra(it didn't work,so back to Concerta)he did gain weight, but lost it all when we went back to Concerta. He barely eats breakfast or lunch at school(I work in the cafeteria so I see him dump his tray). Dinner is ok and them he'll snack before bed. He is in 6th grade is 12y/o and stepped on the scale this morning....56lbs The child just doesn't eat. Maybe if we bribe him w/$

My best idea is to "calorie up" dinner and snack (since those seem to be the best eaten)... Do you give the concerta before or after breakfast? I always give sd's after breakfast she eats more that way... If you are already doing that, then maybe (and I know this wont make you happy! ) get him up earlier, let him play for a while to maybe work up an appetite? Just a couple of thoughts, not much help I am sure since sd just now weighs 40 lbs at 9 years old she weighs only 4 lbs more then my 3 year old... Good luck it is a daily struggle for most I have read... cat

Brocksmom, I'm sorry to hear he's not putting on weight. Can I ask, how concerned is the doctor or doctors about this? I'm glad that you can see him not eat his lunch, so that way you can monitor his progress better, but is he buying lunch and he'd rather pack, or anything.
Load him up at dinner time. Those calories can be just that little extra for him. Is his metabolism naturally high? My husband is usually about 150 lbs and is 6', during the summer months, but as soon as the cold hits, he eats like there's no tomorrow. And he gains about 20 lbs. Protien drinks and stuff like that didn't work for him, or I would recommend them.
Hope you find something.

rosyred- it is some what of a concern for the doc too. he's also in gymnastics 3 times a week so he burns up the little he does eat. as far as lunch i ask him if want to bring a sack lunch and he says no.
catseye- he gets his meds right away when he wakes up --about 6:30 and eats @7:00 , the thing is if i give him his meds after he eats he won't get them until about 7:30 - 7:45 cuz he screws aroung the whole time he eats. he's at the kitchen table w/ nothing to distract him and it takes him that long to eat.... it's very irritating.... then the teacher has to deal w/ him until the meds kick in. he never was a big breakfast eater so i don't think it would make a big difference

some people use carnation instant drinks with ice cream in them. Jared didn't like the protein drinks but he loved the carnation shakes. Just a thought.

Sorry to hear you have problem´s to get your ds to eat. You´ve already told that you cant give concerta any later than now, but with my ds concerta kick´s in on ½ an hour so, it´ll be the worst time to get him eat anything....
I dont actually know how to help you on this, I give ds his med´s on brecfast, he take´s the med and start´s eating, if he carrie´s on with some distraction, he doesn´t eat almost at all later.... but ds is on med´s on schoolday´s only and does eat on weekend´s, he is not a skinny one, but normally build.
I feel your concern´s, since we added ritalin on afternoon´s, I can see him skipping the dinner most day´s, but he usually eat´s a snack before bedtime. My only advice would be; try to get him eat before bedtime and dont watch calorie´s. Good luck!!

My son doesn't weigh much either---he is 13 and is 74lbs. We do the carnation thing here in the morning. I buy french vanilla carnation and switch flavors of sherbert to add to it-----so one wk I will buy orange and the next wk cherry. Anyways I make up one pkg of carn. in a spill proof sport bottle (from walmart only 88cents) and add a few scoops of sherbert and shake very good----I give this to levi to drink ALONG with his breakfast (not in place of). He really likes it this way---somedays he just can't drink it all so we put it in the freezer and he will get it out when he gets home from school or practice and drink the rest of it then. Good luck to you.......

I am so sorry you are going through the weight issues. I have been there too with my daughter. We had almost given up when we put her on strattera and she started gaining weight. It unfortunately did nothing for her adhd as well. So we had one last med to try. It is the adderall xr. It is working for now. And she is maintaining her wieght. Have you tried the adderal xr? I hope you are able to get things under control. I know it is soo frustrating.

well I sure know how you feel, Ds 4th grade 9yo 47 pounds. my Dr. is very concerned I see her again ion the 16 of december I know she will want him to see a nutritinist, I dont see what it will do. today he refused breakfast I gave him carnation instant breackfast chocolat milk that's it for luch he eat 3 chicken nugets (McD) no fries..... dinner a bowl a soup he will eat icecream before bed thats it! I've tried it all I try to make him milk shakes with bananas or I sneak tofu in it but he doesnt whant them every day, he never ever eats vegetables and no meat aside from chicken nuggets and fish sticks. some people tell me to make him east vegies of starve but he is so thin I dont know I think he would just not eat if I told him that is all he can have, then what? althought the meds dont help ds has alwas been very small tfor his age my now 3yo is bigger then DS was at 4 my 3yo is wearing size 5 clothes and my 9yo is wearing 6x or7 med change is not an option here in Canada strattera is not available yet our choices are ritalin and concerta.

You know I think this might be one of the most scary side effects of the meds that we can underestimate. Derk had the same problems when on the meds, the worst was Dexadrine where he didn't grow or gain weight for months. But we had battles with eating on all the stims.
I think the real key is nutrient intake, even more than calories. I have only discovered this in hindsight after we recently did some extensive testing and discovered that he is now only absorbing 20% of his food and his bone density is way below normal. I had focused more on calories and filling him up when a lot of it was pretty high in cholesterol and fats. That may not seem to matter when your child is thin, but it actually has an impact on their health.
My recommendation is a good multivitamin-mineral to make sure the "bases are covered" and then to work on getting high nutritition food into him when he will eat. Protein shakes with added vitamins are a good choice, plus lean protein, veggies and fruits.
Also, just a note on the bone building issue - Derk drank about 1/2 gallon of milk a day, so I thought he was good on calcium. But in fact, many people cannot digest and use the calcium from dairy products. And we found out he is actually highly allergic to dairy so it was hurting rather than helping. Frustrating at times to be a mom.
