I just ordered the Nordic Naturals DHA for my 16 year old son. I calculated and he should be taking 840mg of magnesium. The multi vitamin that I give him only has 40mg of magnesium. Where can I buy the chewable magnesium or one that is not outrageously huge to swallow? I don't want to make the mistake and buy at WalMart which is where I bought a Fish Oil vitamin that is not really what I needed for the omega3. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

But what does the magnesium taste like? Will kids like it? My son really does like the Nordic Naturals DHA strawberry flavor.

Am not sure about chewables, but I tried a liquid magnesium once, it is was BBAAAAADDDDD. Had a hot taste to it and very bitter. But check with your health food store. They told me when I bought it that I could bring it back if the taste was too bad, and I did. That takes some of the risk out of buying something you are not sure if your child will tolerate the taste of it.

Hi Laura -- I'm assuming that your son is fairly large, in the 140 pound range, right? This is the gray area where giving enough magnesium and giving too much aren't entirely clear. For a boy your son's age, the NIH (National Institutes of Health) recommend a maximum of 410mg per day. This limit is based on the likelihood of the magnesium causing stomach ache or diarrhea (which can be avoided by gradually working up to the appropriate dose). On the other hand, under medical supervision, patients with migraine and a variety of other medical conditions, are routinely given doses that are much higher. The risk with excessive magnesium is that it can cause blood pressure to drop too much. (That's why magnesium is also an excellent treatment for high blood pressure.) I'm not saying that you shouldn't give your son this much magnesium, just that if you do you should use caution, build up gradually to that dose, watch for symptoms of toxicity, and cut back to a maintenance dose of 410mg as soon as the deficiency has been resolved. Since magnesium toxicity if the magnesium comes from dietary sources is pretty much impossible, a solution might be to provide the maximum dose in supplement form (the 410mg, or in that neighborhood) and get the rest of the extra magnesium from foods. For example, 1/4 cup of roasted pumpkin seeds will provide an additional 300mg magnesium. 1/2 cup of almonds provides 240mg. You can find a list of magnesium-rich foods here: www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/nutrition/factsheets/magnesium.htmlOn the other hand, my son is 10 and the maximum recommended dose for that age group is 240mg. I give my son 400mg per day at this point, and he suffers no ill effects at all. I've used a couple of types of capsules that provide a lot of elemental magnesium but aren't huge. The KAL magnesium glycinate has 200mg per capsule and they're not particularly large, no bigger than a B-complex. Same thing with the BlueBonnet brand "Magnesium 400", which is the same size, has the same amount of magnesium, in the form of magnesium aspartate hypochloride. (Do not buy magnesium oxide. Not only are these ENORMOUS, but they are not bio-available at all.) I'm with AustinsMom on the liquid magnesium...gross, gross stuff.

catatonic, thank you so much for the reply and yes, my son weighs about 145. I am going to check out the brands that you gave me. Thank you again, your reply was very educational and I am glad that you explained it so well because I would have probably ended up giving him 840mg of magnesium and really make him a little sick.

I currently give my DS the Source Naturals Attentive Child. It's a chewable with 60 mg magnesium per "wafer". My son doesn't like them very much, and I have a hard time getting him to choke down even 3 a day. So I guess I also need to re examine my choice... Bunny

It seems like no matter what they do to chewable vitamins, they still taste like vitamins. I bought a chewable cal/mag that I just couldn't even force myself to choke down after a couple of days. I'm not very good at swallowing pills, but I've learned to get them down because the alternatives are just too darned gross!
