Hi Oh Mama, Firstly so happy to read you have found a Dr. you feel good about and I am sure it will work out with your son. Hope you are working on detoxifying his liver, never never give him anyting with parecetamol (Tynenol or Panadol in the US) it is impossible for people with liver problems to handle!! I don't know if I am posting in the right section but know you will have some excellent advise for me. I went to my Dr. this week for me and talked about my depression and he prescribed me Paxil. I bought it came home and read the leaflet and got on the internet and it scared the pants off me. I have never taken anything that is not natural/homeopathic in my life, maybe the odd Advil, that is all. Yikes... The side effects are scary. I have been taking a St. John's Wort everynight for the last week and feel abit better, you told me about Smae, I have read about it on the internet, very interesting. I think I want to try this before I go for the meds. I can buy it here in Portugal no problem. Shall I take it in combination with the St. Jonh's Wort??? Take it at night or in the morning, please give me some info. on how best to take it? I am sorry to bother you at such a difficult period in your life but I know you will have some good answers for me.. Thanks so much. RRR

Ross, Don't take this with St. John's Wort. It should be taken on an empty stomach (first thing in the morning is good).
I was also prescribed an antidepressant, Wellbutrin but am going to try SamE first. I will give you more information on this when I am able. I will have more time tonight or in the morning. It is no problem for me to look this up, we can compare notes on taking it!

I've used Sam-e very successfully. Just make sure you take enough. The 200mg tablets are too small to achieve any real therapeutic effect. Go with the 400mg instead. For me, the results were very fast, within a day or two, but also tended to disappear if I forgot for even a day.
Some sources recommend with starting out taking 400mg two or three times a day and then backing down the dose to a single 400mg once you're feeling better. (You may need to work up to this gradually so you don't upset your stomach.)
Generally, the research that's been done showing Sam-e to be as effective as pharmaceutical anti-depressants has used the higher doses (either 800mg or 1200mg daily). It's not cheap to take this much.
It's not recommended if you suffer from bipolar, since it can trigger manic episodes. (This is not just the case with Sam-e, but with all anti-depressants as well.) OhMama is absolutely right that you shouldn't take Sam-e in conjunction with any other anti-depressants.

Cat, Do you know of any place to get some of this at a good price? It sure is expensive!
I have the Source Naturals brand, serving size 2 tablets = 400mg SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine) but it says from 800mg of SAMe disulfate tosylate?? What does that mean??
Ross, What brand do you have? That St. John's Wort seems to have stopped working for me too so I will try this before I resort to meds. I don't want those side effects either!

Dear Cat & Oh Mama, You two are truly stars!! Always so helpful and informative. Oh Mama I used to take Solgar St. John's Wort and now have a bottle manufactered by Spa Vitimins in the UK, they are both supposed to be standardized, blah, blah, don't know if it is the different brand but honestly I think the effect on me is quite minimal, the mornings do seem a little better when I take it but hard to tell. Still having disturbed sleep patterns, stay awake most night from about 1 am to 3 am, just what I need!! I will proberly buy the Solgar brand SAMe as it is the most popular brand sold here. I see on the Solgar site , they have a complex that is a Enteric coated one that has 200mg. I will run over to the mall soon and see what they have and let you know, the solgar site does have a warning not to take it with any AD drugs or if you are bipolar. I too am terrified of the side effects of these AD drugs, Yikes. I also take 100mg a day of Vitamin B6 and 1000mg a day of Evening Primrose Oil. The Vitamin B6 gives me a pickup, don't think they market it in 100mg in the US as they say it give numbness in the extremities but I have absolutely no problem and here in Europe 100mg is the standard size. Ok let's keep each other posted and thanks both of you for your support.

I don't know a cheap place for Sam-e, but maybe cheapER...
I got mine from the Herbal Advisor, and it's the 400mg from Source Naturals, 30 tablets for about $20, which is the cheapest I've found anywhere -- though still pretty expensive.
I don't know much about the chemistry of these supplements, but disulfate tosylate is a salt. Sam-e is, on its own, very unstable...hence the salt compound. Sam-e is also not very bioavailable. Enteric coating on the tablets is important because the coating helps make sure the Sam-e gets through the stomach and into the small intestines where it's absorbed.
Don't forget to take a B-complex or mutli-vitamn with your Sam-e. (You need additional B6, B12 and Folic Acid while taking Sam-e.)

Thanks Cat, I have a B complex at home so will start taking it. Went to the health food store at the Mall to find the Solgar section depleted, asked them when they were getting more and got the "who knows" answer. Some days I really love living in a 3rd world country. I will check out some other stores or get on the internet, I get supplements form the Uk in about 5 days at a portion of the price I pay here. Thanks again.
