Hi Cat, someone posted this link on another board, and since i have not heard about Melatonin causing Tics, I thought I better check with you to see if you have come across this before. My son is on melatonin 1mg to help him sleep. www.adhdnews.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1494&PN=3&TPN=2 Thanks for your help. Mayleng

Mayleng, I could be completely misunderstanding the postulated relationship between melatonin disruption and tourette-type tics as well as tardive dyskinesia, but my interpretation was that the REDUCTION of melatonin secretion was suspected as playing a role in these disorders. Take a look here and see how you read it: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=1365044I've come across several other research articles which imply melatonin may have some benefit as a treatment for tourette's and TD. The supposed connection between melatonin and seizures has also been distorted occasionally. In children with PRE-EXISTING seizure disorders, melatonin may make the seizures worse, so it doesn't seem like a very good idea to give it to an epileptic! I have a good article that summarizes the recent research on melatonin, from "Pediatric Pharmacotherapy", which is a quick read and only 4 pages long. If you email me, I'd be happy to send it along.

Cat, after some research I also come up with the same conclusion that you did, that melatonin is supposed to help with the tics or at least I could not find any articles or studies to say otherwise. However, it did say not to give take it if you have an autoimmunie disease - which I guess if a child has underlying PANDAS, it could surface if triggered as in the case with stimulant use. Thanks for checking this up for me. I will send you a Private mail with my email address. Iwould like to receive that article you mentioned. Thank you again.

Cat, I sent you a PM with me email address on it. Did you email me the info yet. I am afraid it might be in my junk filter and I might have deleted it. Let me know when you send it so I can keep an eye out. Thanks again.
