Need some advice from my faithful advisors . Austin is a mosquito magnet, and he has a harsh response to them. In the past, I have used B vitamins--of which I believe B-1 is reported to be the key ingredient. When he takes them, presto--no bites. However, now I realize he can't tolerate the B 50 vitamin (he becomes argumentative to the extreme). He is taking B6 and B12 and tolerating them. I know he can take inositol. But based on a previous post by catatonic regarding the B1/B6 study where many kids react to one or the other; if they tolerate B6 they don't B1 and vice versa, I'm guessing B1 might be the culprit that causes the reaction. Tonight I bravely purchased some B1. I was at Walmart, so my only option was a 250 mg. My thought is that I would break it up and give a portion that I believe to be less than 50 mg. as a test. I would like to give it at night and see if he can sleep through some of the reaction. Is that a crazy thought? Or are B vits generally energizing and it will make it hard for him to go to sleep? I hate to mess with our routine, but some mosquito feasted on his neck last night--like 6 bites in a square inch area. (Sounds like a vampire mosquito ). And it is driving him crazy and is also upsetting our routine, as far as aggravating him and making him irritable. So what are your thoughts about this??

aw poor guy, I get tore up by mosquitos too. Just keep a record of what his reaction sees to be when you do give it to him. Well, what I have here, doesn't say about keeping mosquitos at bay, I'll look into that a bit later. Did I see somewhere about not eating bananas? I think I did.
I'll have to go look through that post and see if I can't dig something up. BTW can you use skin so soft or anything like that. I swear by it, whereas my husband uses plain old baby oil to ward them off.
Have a good day

I think testing the B1 at night might be a pretty clever way to avoid a reaction, if Austin has one. He might not. The B1/B6 rule is not one that will apply in every case, though it will apply pretty often. You may get lucky and not see a problem (although if you already know he reacts to a B-complex, then that seems unlikely, unless it was the yeast in the capsule causing the problem).
Thiamine (B1) is pretty safe stuff, so if you can't cut the tablets very precisely, don't worry about it. The effects of B1 deficiency are well-known (beri-beri, for example), but there don't appear to be documented results of B1 toxicity. In other words, it would be hard to hurt yourself by taking too much.
I haven't had any experience with the B vitamins being energizing, but if you're concerned about it, give him magnesium at night along with the B1. This has an added benefit...magnesium is a co-factor in the metabolism of Vitamin B1, so you'll be helping him utilize the vitamin better.
I wasn't aware that Vitamin B1 helped repel mosquitos. I'll have to try that myself, since I am plagued by mosquitos, but the smell of mosquito spray makes me sick!

Kaiti, You are thinking about the post by songwriter under the General Non-adhd life topics.
He said don't eat Bananas. Talke B Complex Eat 3 or 4 seeds of plantain daily (a certain weed that grows in yards).
(please see the topic about mosquitoes in that section for exact quote)

Thanks ohmama, I'm still trying to figure out if we have those weeds in our yard. If not, you'll see m ein the neighbors yard trying to get some from there With permission of course. The most promentant thing that I have heard about the b vitamins is for energy and metabolism.
