I usually don't post in this section, but I was reading my back issue of Cosmo last night and I saw an artical on Ephedra.
Of course we all know how dangerous this is, but what I didn't know was that it goes by other names as well. They are Ma Haung and Sida Cordifolia. I just wanted to pass this along. I don't even know if these are common, but I would feel bad if someone got sick or worse and I didn't share.
Have a good day...Becky

I have a few things with the other names listed on them. I try to remember all of the ins and outs of marketing. Just so it doesn't have ephedra on it doesn't mean there isn't another form of something in it.
Thanks Becky!!!!! Kaiti

The place where you have to watch for it is in the herbal remedies with names like Focus or Attention. (I'm not saying those have it in them, just using them as examples of the types of products that do.) Ephedra acts like a stimulant and does increase attention, so is used in some of these products.

Yeah, that is the one issue I have with herbal anything. I used to think that if it said that herbal it instantly meant safe and I was really wrong. I bought some herbal diet pills about 2 years ago that claimed not to have some potentially dangerous substance in it, but they did not advertise that in it's place it had to use others. Since no one really knew that some herbs have more than one name I didn't think about. Well, as it turns out I was wrong. I showed it do my doctor to make sure it was safe and she strongly advised me not ot take it. I wish I could remember what it was, but I can't. I just wanted to let everyone know for saftey's sake. I don't want anyone to think that I am ripping on natural or herbal remedies at all. I am not, I think they are great when bought from a reputable place and you know how to use them.

Oh the benefits are a definate, just not in certain cases. PLUS you need to make sure what ones to watch with certain medications. I can't remember exactly what with what, So I guess checking with your doctor or doing your own research would be a great thing to do.

OMG! Someone at work gave me a tablet that was for weight loss, said it would wake me up (cause I was really dragging that day). I NEVER take things people give me like that, but he's an engineer and was really convincing.
Turns out it had Ma Huong in it and at first I went through this airy, light feeling, then all of a sudden I could focus, and the next thing you know I thought I was literally having a heart attack. I was sweating and shaking profusely and uncontrollably...almost fell out of my chair. Then, I was so speeded up that I couldn't sit still.
It was that diet product that got taken off the market, but I can't remember the name...it was huge. I can't believe that anyone could actually take that stuff and survive. And, I only took 1/2 tablet. He said he takes more than that.

Now that you describe the racing and all that, I've done that with a couple. Scared the day lights outta me when it happened, but I thought it was somethihng else, so I never blamed that pill or anything.
But it is scary, especially if you don't know side effects. I try to look through here and see what side effects might be in question. One time ONLY, I took something someone gave me, but I didn't notice a thing, mental or physical, so that pretty much detered me from doin that again.
