How safe is Melatonin?Steph's dr is out of the country and another dr in his office said to try it for sleep.I have read that it is a hormone and can cause delayed puberty.I have clonidine and I'm wondering if it is safer. She took clonidine last year while she was on concerta and didn't have any problems. It put her to sleep in less than an hour. This dr said he likes to try something natural first. Is natural always better? It has not been studied in children so I am scared to give it to her.Any suggestions?

If you do a search, I know there are previous threads about melatonin with some research links. I have used melatonin (the 1 mg. sublinguils by Source Natural) with my child. I used them as a short term solution to a sleep problem, and it worked well. He would get very sleepy in about 30 min. You might also try a calcium/magnesium capsule at bedtime. If used in moderation, I think natural alternatives are generally safe. Using appropriate research and caution, I feel as comfortable using them as prescriptions--maybe even more so.
