Hi, I used to ask aolt of ?s about the natural way, not using Meds... My dh and I are frustrated so we gave in and ordered the Fiengold materials today. We have tried having ds8 use only natural remedies but he is a child who needs some Medication to help him. We , however would prefer not using Only Meds. We were told by his doctor to do the Feingold diet. My question is that My dh started buying wheat products recently, thinking it is better for Eric. He seems to be worse. is wheat an approved thing in Fengold? Like wheat bread, bagels, noodles? Thanks for reading this involved post. Have a peaceful day, Christina

Hi Christina, Wheat is approved. The Feingold diet eliminates artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives (and natural salicylates for stage 1). It's possible (likely) that the wheat products have artificial preservatives in them - he could be reacting to them. It's also possible that he's allergic to wheat or gluten - wheat allergies are fairly common. I'm new to the Feingold diet myself, but I've heard from more experience Feingoldians, that once you're established on the diet it becomes easy to detect other foods that your child reacts to. Until then you might want to limit his wheat intake. You are very lucky to get a Dr. that actually recommended the Feingold diet! My ds's Dr. told me there are two treatments for ADD, medicine and behavior therapy and behavior therapy only works when the child is medicated. Wish she would have told me about some of the other options available! It'll be very nice for you to get the extra support of a Dr. that believes in the program. Laura

Christina - you're so lucky to have a doctor who is open to using non-med treatments in addition to the meds. Wish they were all like that.
I have two thoughts on the wheat product problem.
First is that even if the breads do not list preservatives (like BHT), they may contain them. BHT in particular is often a component of the pan sprays bakeries use to keep the breads from sticking and they infiltrate the bread, but do not have to be listed on the ingredient panel because they are considered "incidental additives". BHT, along with BHA and TBHQ, are specifically eliminated on the FG diet. I know that my son cannot tolerate commercial bread products that contain BHT. Noodles also often contain BHT (read the Top Ramen ingredients, you'll see).
A second thing to consider is that the wheat itself is a problem for your son. Wheat allergy or wheat sensitivity is not uncommon.
Try using only FG approved bread products for a while and see what happens. If the problem persists, try eliminating wheat products for a week and then reintroducing them.
Third thing...if you notice that the breads and bagels cause problems but the noodles do not, your problem may be corn syrup. Many, many FG families find that corn syrup is a problem. I know that we have to avoid it even in small amounts. Do sodas or lunch box drinks normally set your son off? If so, you might want to look at corn syrup.

Thank You all, Yes, my kids Doc. pulls no punches , which I appreciate . I ordered the Materials yesterday, it said there would be an email confirmation in a couple of days. How long is it before they usuallyrespond that they got my order? Just wondering because I haven't ordered much online. I am going to see what happens with the diet. My hope is, as is his Doc's, is that Eric won't have to use as much meds. as he takes now. That would be great.. Have a peaceful day, Christina

I believe I received the e-mail response after a couple days and then the packet came about a week after I ordered it. That was a long week! Once I decided to do the Feingold diet I wanted to start right away, no patience for me ;D.
Take care,
Laura
