Does anyone have a good recipe for a "kid-friendly" protein shake? I figure it might help with getting some of the supplements in them. Carrieskids

Cat-
I know you can help with this one...
I would like to add a question of my own-I tried some protein powder I got at GNC. I tried it with my son and he hated it so I tried it myself. It was disgusting! I was wondering what kind/flavor you use in your shakes that your kids tolerate!
Thanks, also! Kimmers

Hi, I had the VERY same problem. KIDS...HATED the protein powder just mixed with milk. They REALLY hated the vanilla! I bought a can of CHOCOLATE protein powder and a can of NESTLES QUICK. I mixed about 1/2 and 1/2 and they seem to really like that. Also DON'T give them more than about 4oz. a serving. A little goes a long way and I seem to be throwing it out if they have very much of it.
Hope this helps...madison

I do a lot of tinkering with our protein shake every morning, trying to keep it from getting too boring. Some of the results are quite tasty. Others, like this morning's version of grapefruit juice and frozen cantelope balls are pretty gross. I've found that orange juice makes the tastiest shakes, but since my boy can't drink OJ, grapefruit juice works pretty well. The kids complain that pineapple juice is too sweet and apple juice is just plain disgusting. When you use the soy protein powder, often the result is kind of chalky, so don't use too much. The whey protein powder dissolves more easily and doesn't have that chalky taste. We alternate them. The basic recipe I use (for 3 cups) is:
2 cups juice 1 banana 3 or 4 large ice cubes 1/3 cup vanilla flavored soy milk 1/4 - 1/3 cup protein powder 1/4 - 1/3 cup lecithin
If you quarter the banana and freeze it overnight, you can leave out the ice cubes and cut back the protein powder by 2 tablespoons.
You can add a carton of flavored yogurt instead of the soy milk or instead of the banana.
You can substitute a cup of frozen berries for the banana and ice cubes.
You can use all soy milk (no juice) and add 1/4 cup peanut butter and 1/4 cup chocolate syrup or carob powder.
I really like Madison's idea with the Nestle Quick. I'd try that one if my boy could have the Quick. Creative and sneaky...I like it.

Yes, thanks for the great ideas! I had bought the soy powder so I think that might have been what was so disgusting. I tried the 1/2 and 1/2 with the Nestle Quick powder but it was still gross. It was also chocolate and I notice you use vanilla so maybe that it better tasting. Also, does it keep in the fridge?
Thanks! Kimmers

You might also want to try the whey protein powder, assuming you don't have dairy issues. The whey powder dissolves MUCH more easily without all of those unsightly and nasty-tasting clumps that you get if you try to simply stir the soy powder into something. It tastes better, too (we get vanilla flavor because 2 of my boys have chocolate allergy). It keeps fine in the fridge or freezer...even in the cupboard if you're not going to keep it hanging around forever.
