This study was published in the last issue of Alternative Medicine Review: "Outcome-Based Comparison of Ritalin versus Food-Supplement Treated Children with ADHD" by Karen Harding, PhD; Richard Judah, PhD; Charles Gant, MD, PhD Small sample, 20 children, evaluated using Conners Scale (long form) and Intermediate Visual and Auditory/Continuous Performance Test (measures attentiveness in the face of both visual and auditory distraction, also includes impulse control scales. Children were screened so that all participants "just" had ADHD...that is, no comorbids like bipolar or OCD. The authors' final conclusion was: "The effect of Ritalin versus dietary supplement treatment was found to be essentially the same, and both treatments were found to be effective after four weeks of use." The article contains a list (with amounts) of every supplement used. The basics are: 1. Essential fatty acids 2. Vitamins 3. Minerals 4. Probiotics (acidophilus and bifidus) 5. Amino Acids Because the list of specific nutrients included in each category is fairly long and each category is associated with specific risk factors and raises its own questions, I'll post a list of each one under its own heading. If you'd like to get your own copy of the article, it is now available for FREE here: www.alternativementalhealth.com/articles/gant.pdf
