Hi John. I think your caution is warranted and that we are fortunate on these forums in having some people who can come along and give you their opinion on it. Good luck!!

JB -
I must say I'm impressed with all the time and research you've put into this. Please let us know what effects you see after you officially begin.
We've tried omega 3, a multivitamin and a calcium/magnesium supplement in the past but we're not on anything but Strattera at the moment. We were having trouble with moodiness and I kind of suspect that the supplements plus the Strattera was having something to do with it. I stopped all vits and supps until I could do it under the supervision of a doctor. Just seemed too involved and too important to try this on my own - especially already being on medication.

My son is on alot of the same supplements your using. We dont use the Vit-c or vit-E you have listed. It has been working for us pretty well but I have to really stick to it. The feingold diet has helped but we have a lot of slip backs. I am always looking for new things but I think the supplements are like meds they work different on everyone and you just have to give it a try. I wish you lots of luck with this.

we were on vitamins and supplements from 3/03 to 7/03, but stopped due to the amount of pills. then we started FG 2 months ago and have seen little success on Stage 1. so we are adding the vits and supps with one difference, we are adding 3 times the amount of Omega-3, Vit. C and Vit. E and about 6 time more than the amount of magensium than the first time. we did a hair sample test a year ago. and based off of that test we started vits and supps. but after being on this bb and other have discovered and am now trying the additiona amounts of vits and supps above. i hope it works. we are just about at our last straw with alternative opinions. and mind you, that we have never been on meds yet. thanks for your thoughts!

John, First off, I have a question. You are supplementing with quite a bit of Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5). There's the 50mg stand-alone, 50mg in the B-50, and 30mg in your dose of multi-liquid. I'm not saying this is bad, I'm just curious if you have a reason for increasing the B5 since I haven't come across anything on B5's specific role and am always on the prowl for new information.
On B vitamins in general - be careful to add your B-complex separately as this is one supplement that is highly likely to cause a reaction.
Your multi-vitamin liquid is very nutritionally complete. I'm impressed with it. In fact it is so good on the Vitamin E (contains 200IU) that you could certainly eliminate the separate Vitamin E capsule. Also, with 4mg manganese, you ought to be able to toss the separate manganese tablet. (Recommended intake is between 2 and 5mg per day.) Manganese can be toxic (although it's extremely unlikely at the amount we're talking about here) and symptoms typically begin with Parkinsons-type extrapyramidal signs. There are also good reasons for using additional supplementation as you are doing, so feel free to ignore my caution!
Be aware that the multi contains alfalfa leaf and barley grass, both of which have nutritional value but do contain salicylates. Your child may or may not react to these components. I know that my boy reacted to the Special Two (from Now) which the rest of the family takes, but I'm not sure if it was the alfalfa or apple pectin responsible for the reaction. I would definitely start the multi-vitamin separately from the others to test it out, give it about a week and then remove it to check for behavioral changes.
If your child drinks milk or consumes other dairy products, I'd get rid of the calcium as well. 95% of ADHD children are magnesium deficient. Calcium and magnesium work together but it an opposing fashion, one opening the neuronal channels, the other closing them. The body need twice the amount of magnesium per day as it does calcium.
I think you've been very careful and thorough in researching nutritional products!! If you're concerned about the number of pills, I'd say you could safely do the following, which would reduce the pill load considerably: Omega-3 liquid Multi-Vitamin liquid Vitamin C Magnesium Vitamin B complex

Hi, We do supplements too and I DO think they make a difference on doing school work via settling her down some and homework at home. I try to give as little as possible being too I worry about supplements when it gets more than a multi vitamin every morning. Catotonic ALWAYS has CONCRETE information on supplements so I trust everything she writes! This site is LUCKY to have her!!!! We do SALMON OIL, CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, LECITIN, VITAMIN E and a multi vitamin sometimes. They HATE the chewables! If your child has ALLERGIES you might want to be careful on any vitamins that has those LITTLE pictures of the "Plants" on the front of the vitamin bottle. Also GOOD multi vitamins that have those other grassy/allergic style supplements like ALPHALFA, etc. My girl has ALLERGIES and I wasn't connecting VITAMINS and ALLERGIES! She can't have ANY of those type of vitamins!! ANY extra vitamin C ALL my kids get CANKER SORES in their mouths from the EXTRA C so that's something to look out for. It's hard to connect stuff like that to the vitamins sometimes. I can't even give them the multi vitamin with EXTRA C due to them getting canker sores from them!! The OMEGA'S were FINE with just ONE in the mornings with my boy but giving him one in the morning and one after school after about a couple of weeks taking them started to have NOSE BLEEDS!!! Scared me to DEATH!! I just couldn't figure out WHY he was having them?? It's not really the vitamin but if your child is sentive the OMEGA'S thin the blood and HE started to have problems!! He's FINE with just ONE in the morning. He used the Neuro DHA which is a GOOD product and he said "Help him ALOT with getting homework done at school!!" But it's a pure form and I don't know forsure if a fish oil supplement would change that factor but doing the FISH oil DIDN'T help him in class like those Neuro DHA's. My girl does the SALMON oil and the Neuro's DIDN'T help her. Salmon HELPED more! She NEVER had nosebleeds from taking Salmon oil and has been using it for 2yrs now. Well, didn't mean to ramble on...Hope this helps a little...take care...Madison

Hey Madison - long time no see!!!!!!!! Where have you been hiding yourself? Glad you're here and posting Be sure and post more often -- we need more contributors who say nice things about me Thank you. The canker sores from Vitamin C is interesting. Does this happen only with chewables, or with the swallowable tablets as well? I'm glad you got the nosebleed thing sorted out. It's constant detective work living in the great human science fair experiment, isn't it?

Hi, Catatonic's reply is very thorough, but I might add that your increase of the magnesium may be best tolerated if you go slowly. Remember what milk of magnesia does! I am about to switch from Now to Nordic Naturals for the omegas. Look forward to hear how things are going for you. Oh, some people can't tolerate additional folic acid. My son has high histamine and can't, so I have to use separate B vitamins. lisle
