Yesterday was terrible for my son. He had a bad day and his teacher was really nice about it. A child in his class fell down yesterday. My son tried to help or something and ended up steping on the boy in the face and everything. The teacher knew it was an accident but my son couldnt even explain how it happened. The vice principle had to be informed because the other boy has sickle cell. Everyone involed was understanding thank God because I have informed them on my sons condition also and they like him. Its just that it feels like everything is starting over again. The teacher said he is finishing his work and getting good grades but he does the work real fast and is all over the place after he finishes. He also just made the basketball team and I dont want to mess this up it has done so much for him. He plays with the older kids so the kids in his class thinks it is cool.
I am giving my son captain crunch cereal plain with no colors in the morning. He eats no candy lately no pop. He is drinking water and maybe a neste brisk once in a while. I try to cook dinner instead of eating out. I think his dad gave him some fruit punch on Sunday and his head hurt all day on Monday he even slept in class.
Well I have been trying to do this feingold thing on my own for 2 months. I am going to order it today because I do see some changes but I think I need the info to see if it can really help. I am also reading 12effective ways by Laura Stevens. It is very good. Just needed some suggestions until I get the materials if anyone would like to help. Catatonic has been really helpful she gave me a list of snacks that would be okay for my son and it has helped. She also gave me a list of supplements that have helped so much so I am going to hang in there. I am positive it can work if I try harder.

It is difficult to implement the Feingold program at first even if you DO have the materials...so doing it on your own is even harder! Quit beating yourself up, you are doing the best you can! Here are a few things that are safe to help you 'till your foodlist arrives. Breakfast: First, use only whole milk, and whole milk products including cheese, yogurt, etc. Eggo BUTTERMILK waffles with Philadelphia cream cheese smear Malto-Meal Golden Puffs Cereal Crispix Cereal (big box only not individual serving size) Grape Nuts cereal (my guy loves this if I put a little sugar in) Scrambled eggs made with butter
Lunch: Homemade bread (if not HM then use Lender egg or Einsteins plain bagels) with cheese peanut butter egg salad made with Hellman's or Best Foods mayo celery or carrot sticks Fritos or Plain Lays chips
Dinner Delimex Taquitos plain chicken or beef dipped in sour cream Minimally processed chicken broiled with salt and pepper baked potato with whole milk sour cream and real butter peas carrots corn potatos and pasta all make good side dishes Pasta with butter and Kraft parmesan cheese
Drinks: Minute Maid Lemonade Milk Sprite Coke Vruit tropical blend (health food store) Looza mango nectar (at Target but pricey)
My kids are happy with mostly milk so this hasn't been too hard.
Hope these items help while you wait for your materials. Don't give up! I thought I was going crazy the first few months I was really doing everything I could and wasn't sure if it was working, and now 1 year later our whole life is so much better! I wouldn't trade Feingold for a liftetime supply of meds if they paid me!

Thanks,
I will put these things on our menu this week. Thanks for the drink list I was looking for things he could drink. I was wondering about the sprite. I think that sprite may have to much corn syrup he usually acts up with sprite. I will try these other ones though. We need as much advise as possible. I am sure when I get the info I will have millions of questions. I dont want to wear out my welcome with you guys.
Thanks

After being on the program after a while you may want to get rid of corn syrup. One can only gauge how certain things effect their child after all the hidden stuff has been eliminated and possible culprits are isolated and can then be removed and added back in to test. My son reacts to it, but I allow it occasionally at a party or other situation where hyperactvity and being obnoxious isn't going to cause a lot of damage. For some, the reaction to corn syrup is more serious such as rage crying or longer it can lasting....so it would depend on each kid. However it is approved for Feingold basic stage 1. Non-Corn syrup drinks are pricey, so we only use them occasionally anyway. My son drinks whole milk with breakfast and dinner and gets bottled water in his lunch and he's fine with that. There is a way to work around just about any obstacle in this program! Keep up the good work...you couldn't possibly overstay your welcome, we have all been there and know how hard it is!

Babytay, You hang in there. I know sometimes it feels like you just work your tail off trying to do all the right things and why the heck doesn't it help? It can be depressing and exhausting and overwhelming at times. And then it will turn around and you'll just KNOW that what you're doing is right and it's working. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, your child will eat or drink something when he's away from you that will turn him into a monster. (And sometimes he'll do this every day for a week until you figure it out!!!) Or he'll have a food sensitivity that you haven't even begun to suspect. (For my boy it's corn syrup big time and corn anything else to a lesser extent.) Those kinds of things are dis-heartening, but they're just setbacks, not failures. You're doing a great job with a challenging situation. A really great job. On Sprite...it is evil. Temper tantrum in a bottle. My son turns into the Spaz Boy From H*ll when he drinks that stuff. Luckily he now recognizes this...so he tries to convince me that Coke is a healthy alternative, if you can believe that warped 9-year-old logic. On cereal...while plain Captain Crunch is an enormous improvement over the crunch berry kind, it still may by too much sugar to start the day. Is your boy really committed to his Captain Crunch? Would he respond to a cheese quesadilla instead? A protein shake? Cottage cheese with cinnamon sugar on top? I know my son does better when he has some real food sitting like lead in his belly to help pin him down to his chair in class. Good luck...and don't you dare worry about wearing out your welcome. We all need each other's help around here!

Yes he would like to change to some of those breakfast items you mentioned. He really doesnt like to eat cereal all the time but I was trying to give him something better until I got my materials. I am already using some other suggestions on hear and some of the snacks I got from you catatonic. You guys really gave me a good boost with the positive posts thanks. I am also using the chart idea someone mentioned. I am just doing a little chart with morning, school, and home. If he get dressed and eats he gets morning stars. if he is good at school all day he gets a star, if he is good for me at night (homework ) he gets a star. It is really working. I give him 50 cent if he gets 3 stars he gets nothing for 2 stars its cheep but he is happy with it. Hope all is well with everyone else here. thanks

Breakfast: First, use only whole milk, and whole milk products including cheese, yogurt, etc. When you say use only "whole milk" do you mean as opposed to "semi-skimmed"? (Just wondering because we always use semi-skimmed!!

Often times, but not always the Vitamin A palmitate used in Low-fat and non-fat milks is preserved with BHT, a preservative that is derived from petroleum and is eliminated on the Feingold program. Not all brands are the same! Safeway's Dairy Glen and Lucerne brands use non-BHT vitamin A palmitate and are safe. The preservatives BHA, BHT, and TBHQ are the additives that are impossible to avoid without a Feingold foodlist because there are so many loopholes for them to be in the product but not on the ingredient list. Whole milk doesn't have any vitamin A palmitate, so it is always safe no matter what brand.

Denver Sarah, Thanks for the info on milk. I was just wondering about this after I had read through the posted food list. I will call the producer of our milk to try to find out about this. We prefer 2% for the lower fat content. Lori

Anne - You must be in Britain. I recognize the milk terminology. You don't have to use the full-cream milk. Generally, what you call semi-skimmed is our whole milk. If it's in the range of 4% milk fat, then it's American terminology "whole" milk. I remember my surprise the first time the milkman brought our order to the door in Wales. I'd requested "whole" milk (American version) and received "whole" milk (English version) and couldn't figure out why there was that big layer of fatty cream floating on top. Skimmed and non-fat milk should be avoided. Semi-skimmed is normally fine and free of Vitamin A palmitate and the BHT used to preserve it.

DenverSarah, is coke OK on FG diet? I thought it had artificial colors or something. If its ok, that would be one less source of contention at my house if Austin could have an occasional coke!

Babytay,
First let me say that I'm glad your reviewing your child's diet. The other thing I need to emphasize is to get the program materials.
I know everyone is trying to be helpful by giving you acceptable products to try, but what's acceptable in one region, may not be acceptable in another! Food is manufactured in many different parts of the country and sometimes the same brand has a different process type, depending on where the manufacter is located.
That's one of the reasons why the Feingold Food Lists are targeted toward regions rather than nationally.
I guess I'm concerned to see so many people trying to do this on their own, and worried that they may just end up saying--we tried it and saw no improvement.
With the holidays coming up this would be a great gift to ask for, or to give! Not only would you get the food list, which is constantly updated by the way, because companies are always messing around with things, but you would get the binder, which would answer so many of your questions.
I thought it was a hefty membership fee--we were really broke when we joined--but it was the best money I ever spent. It sure was a lot cheaper than all those psych visits, and prescription copays *lol*
Sorry if this sounds a little harsh, but I felt compelled to voice it!
Hugs~** Foley

Foley is right about the many benefits of joining the Feingold Association. I tried to do the diet independently for about 4 months before finally deciding to join. The reason I joined at last was that my son's behavior had improved SO MUCH overall that I was astonished, yet there were still times where he was HORRIBLE and I had no idea why. With the food list, it's easier to be sure that I'm not inadvertently contaminating him again, but it's still not perfect. We are still in the process of figuring out secondary sensitivities and testing salicylates, and we have some rocky days, but at least he is overall clean and even his bad days aren't as bad as "normal" days used to be. Feingold is a non-profit org, so they are able to work with people in cases of financial need. I am really very glad I spent the money, and that's a big admission from a dedicated cheapskate like me!!!
On the Coke...no, no, no, bad bad. Sprite is acceptable if you must have sodas, but it is LOADED with corn syrup. You can look for Blue Sky sodas in health food stores (they aren't full of artificials, but they do have a ton of corn syrup) or get Schweppes Ginger Ale.

Hello all,
Yes I do agree I need the materials. I have ordered them but I havent gotten them yet. I think oredered them last Thursday. I think things will go much better once I receive them.
Foley your words arent harsh they are true. I do need the materials but I had a hard time getting the loot together. I wanted to go ahead a pay the full price for the kit I felt kind of bad about trying to get a discount on it when I found out it is used for people on a fixed income. I am sure someone else will need that resource that doesnt have a income.
Well I hope it gets to me soon. Thanks again to everybody.
