Hi Cat! Hadn't heard much out of you lately, I was starting to get a little nervous... I was wondering what kind of DMAE you have started and also how much. I am hoping this will help address alot of the recent things that have started to surface. I also decided to splurge for the Feingold. I get paid Friday and then I will be on the phone to order! We have seen great results but we just haven't reached that wonderful place where the ADHD/ODD issues aren't still the center of our lives, and I just know that the Feingold will help tremendously. If I can also eliminate the bedwetting every single night I think I will be in heaven! LOL Anyway, thanks for all of your help and guidance, and also to anyone else reading this who has offered advice and info. We truly would not be this far without any of the things I find here. I am also interested in the DMAE, and would love to hear specifics on it Catatonic. I really appreciate all of your well researched comments. You are definitely an incredible source of information and support for all of us!

Kimmers, I hope that joining the Feingold Association does the trick. I've found that sticking closely to the food list avoids "mystery reactions" due to hidden additives in foods. (Things like BHT in bakery pan sprays, that aren't listed on ingredients.) Also, the Feingold support board is an excellent source of advice. I know it's a lot of money to join. I thought about it for months before biting the bullet and giving them my hard-earned money. I've never regretted it. THe past two days have shown me just how much the diet and supplements can achieve. My son has stuck faithfully to his diet and taken his vitamins like a little robot. His behavior has been simply amazing. If I got this level of cooperation from him all the time, I guarantee his teachers would love me. He's inspired by the fact that we have a houseful for Thanksgiving - grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins - and he doesn't want them to think he's a monster. If I could figure out how to make this stick, and not have him go back to sneaking off-diet food that turns him into Spaz-Boy from H*ll, it would be a major victory. DMAE is used to help produce the neurotransmitter choline. I know that the lecithin (which has a similar effect, in addition to providing phospholipids) has had a beneficial effect on my son, so it seems likely the DMAE would as well. There is a good general description of DMAE including recommended dosages here: www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/substances_view/1,1525,10023,00.html One thing to keep in mind...anyone with a history of seizures or bipolar should NOT NOT NOT take DMAE. Also, from what I've read, it takes several weeks to even begin seeing the results of DMAE, and as much as 6 months for it to reach full effectiveness. We haven't been using it that long yet so I can't say from first-hand experience just what it will ultimately achieve. I do believe that in the weeks since my son began taking the DMAE, his hyper level has decreased noticeably. Let's hope it keeps up.

Thanks so much Cat! I have been kicking around the idea of adding the DMAE for awhile and after reading the article you added I am going to go for it. But do you think I should stop all of the supplements when first starting the Feingold or will it be okay to keep taking them and also adding the DMAE? I know the Feingold program will be very very beneficial, I was just so reluctant to try because of the cost. I am 100% Dutch (we are very very tight with money) and the thought of throwing that money away was horrifying! LOL But I have heard so many successes from it on this board that I can't ignore them any longer. I know what I have to do. Thanks so much for EVERYTHING!

Kimmers - From what I've heard from more experienced Feingolders, it's best not to do anything but the diet for the first 6 weeks. That way, you won't be confused over behavioral changes...if they're due to the diet or to something else you've done.
If you're already using some supplements and have been using them for a while (like 6 weeks or more) I really don't see why you'd need to remove them. However, adding new supplements probably ought to wait at least until you've completed "Stage 1" which lasts 6 weeks.
I don't think I would take existing supplements away, because personally I'm really reluctant to change anything that sends my son back to that awful time I call (with a shudder of horror) the "before" time. Those more experienced with the Feingold program might advise you differently, though. I started the diet before I started supplements, so I didn't have to deal with that problem.
I'm with you on the throwing away money thing (for me it's the Scottish in me!) but I really think the Feingold Association membership has been a good investment. Way better than paying for a Ritalin prescription every month!
