Hey all,
I was just thinking and wanted to get your opinions... I am doing the Atkins Diet, have been for a couple months.. I am looking into the Feingold Diet for ds9... My question is would the Atkins Diet be beneficial at all to him?? Or is the Feingold Diet best?? I feel like this is a stupid question but thought it was worth asking... Thanks for your input!!

I think that the Atkins diet and the Feingold diet could work very well together. Certainly the Atkins diet, with its emphasis on high protein consumption and low carbohydrates, would be a good nutritional program for an ADHD child to follow. The first changes my nutritionist friend recommended were to increase protein, decrease sugars and carbohydrates, and feed more frequent smaller meals. I'm not that well versed in the Atkins diet, but those recommendations sure sound a lot like Atkins to me.
The Feingold diet focuses on removal of harmful additives that are included in food. Some foods that would be acceptable on the Atkins diet, would not be permissible on the FG. (For example, cured or processed meats, or even good old wholesome chicken or beef if it has "solution added".)
There's no reason you couldn't do both diets simultaneously...just make sure you select the food you'll be preparing for your Atkins meals from FG approved items. If you're going to have bacon and eggs, buy Oscar Mayer bacon. Make sure your chicken breasts contain ONLY chicken. Etc etc.
Following the Feingold diet has made a major difference in my son's behavior. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone dealing with children like ours.

I can think of at least 3 people who are FG families with an adult on Atkins in addition to FG, and it's not a problem. However, if you are considering them both...I would suggest starting FG and then incorporating in the Atkins after a couple months just to smooth the transition and make the FG start as simple as possible.
