Hi Everyone Was wondering if anyone had an answer to this question.... Does anyone here know if Jiffy corn muffin mix box is treated with bht or something?....... DS was wonderfull the entire weekend. I decided to make some corn bread using jiffy corn muffin mix, ingredients list on the box didn't have anything artificial in it, or any preservatives. Well, 15 minutes after eating half a slice of cornbread, DS turned into a MONSTER!!!!! , I mean we had a major reaction..... then to top things off, the next day he snuck a pepperidge farm milano cookie....GRRRRRRR....Had to give him alka seltzer gold twice yesterday.....Lord have mercy on my soul.. . DS now hates alka seltzer gold and ME for forcing him to drink it.....literally had to threaten him with a butt wupping before he would drink it....Sorry guys...but aside from the question, I guess i needed to vent..... Thanks for listening.

Can't remember what it was, but the Jiffy corn bread did have a big NO NO. Might have been bht in packaging as you suggested. Really can't remember now. I remember being hopeful, and having to put it back because it was not ok. I know it's not FG approved.
BTW, we've been able to eat most of the milanos (stage 1) w/o reaction. They used to be approved, but stopped filling out forms.
Sorry about the reaction...I empathize.

Hi Riahbobbapooh
I've never had a problem with the milanos either, but i think that either my son has developed a reaction to chocolate or maybe it was just the mix of the corn bread and the chocolate...I don't know. He reacted to chocolate once before (homemade chocolate syrup as per fiengold recipe) so I think he might be sensitive to chocolate(I really hope not, cause he REALLY loves chocolate)....I'll have to reintroduce him to chocolate at a later date and just make sure.....
Thanks for the info about the Jiffy corn muffin mix.

You're welcome. I hope chocolate's not a problem! I feel so bad every time I have to eliminate something else! (We have a lot of allergies outside of FG.)

I can't remember the problem with Jiffy corn muffin mix, either, just that there is one. Jiffy baking mix is FG approved, but Jiffy corn muffin mix is not. So there must be a problem with it, since the company obviously cooperates with product research, yet it is not approved. Probably one of the preservatives. I know other corn muffin mixes list either BHT or TBHQ in ingredients.
Just as a matter of useless information, did you know that BHT is banned in England? They have apparently found the research on its neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity convincing enough!

BHT is a preservative, of the anti-oxidant type, generally used to prevent rancidity in packaged/processed foods containing oils/fats. The initials stand for butylatedhydroxytoluene.
BHT is often a "hidden" additive in foods. That is, a peanut packager will roast the peanuts in oil that contains BHT. Because he purchases this oil in bulk and does not intend to resell it but instead will incorporate it into another product, his final product is exempt from FDA labeling disclosure regulations. In other words, the peanuts will contain BHT but the peanut company does not have to include this information in the list of ingredients.
BHT is evil. It is damaging to your health (hence the ban on its use in England), it often has a truly horrific impact on behavior (my son is a living example), and it's hard to avoid.

I just joined this board today, but noticed the question on here about Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix. It DOES contain BHT, BHA or TBHQ in it. We are unable to accept these at FG. Cindy

Dear Kaiti,
That is not a dumb question at all.
When we research products for Feingold I have found that most companies know their suppliers pretty well and what they don't know they can find out if they really want to.
Since fresh veggies and fruit are accepted on Feingold we don't get that detailed though. Normally we research processed foods and their hidden ingredients.
As far as what was put on a crop, I know that Gerber gets that detailed with their produce for their baby foods.
