Well, I am totally baffled about the situation with my son lately. Remember the whole chocolate bar incident? Well as I updated earlier, I picked him up from school Friday afternoon and he was good as gold until about suppertime, right before we ate. Suddenly he turned into monster child again. I mean not just a bad day, but like he USED to be! Freaked me out bad! All weekend long he was absolutely horrible. I found myself yelling at him constantly, it was like he didn't hear a word I said. I haven't had to resort to yelling at him in so long that when I did, I really felt terrible about it. Waste of time though because yelling didn't do a bit of good. I even had to spank him twice! I haven't had to spank him in months! That got his attention but only lasted a little while. He has been throwing the temper tantrums again, the back-talk, fighting with his sister (not leaving her alone), bouncing off the walls, back to arguing with us again, etc, etc. you name it. I am throwing my hands in the air. All of this hard work seems to be going down the toilet. My first thought was to take him completely off all of the supplements and add them back in one at a time...have him take one for a week at a time and if nothing happens then add another the next week and so on. See if he is having a reaction to something there. What do you think? The only thing I can think of that he had that might have had a bad reaction was lemonade. Is that even something that would cause an issue?? I don't know what to do next...any ideas??! Thanks Kimmers

Before we found Feingold, we thought our oldest had a problem with caffeine or chocolate. Every time she had hot cocoa or chocolate chips, my sweet lovable child got a nasty mean streak, and no one could stand her!
Turns out, it was the vanillin (artificial, chemical vanilla). With pure vanilla, she can have chocolate with no problems!
All those nasties in processed foods are disgusting.
BTW, reading the label doesn't necessarily tell you what's in the item. Truth in labeling is a myth.

So even the actual PACKAGES that the foods come in can cause problems...such as the boxes and bags? Holy cow, what's left to eat then!? I guess I am not sure what to think, I mean I guess it could be alot of things. We ate out alot this weekend due to a very hectic schedule and so maybe it was the foods there?
He had cheese pizza on Friday night, oatmeal for breakfast Saturday morning (the instant Quaker Oats kind with Peaches), chicken nuggets and fries for dinner on Saturday with lemonade (that's where the lemonade comes in), and then french toast with syrup Saturday night. Sunday morning he had oatmeal again (except Strawberries this time), pizza again for dinner Sunday and then for supper on Sunday he had about a bite of goulash, some cottage cheese, applesauce, pickled beets, and ice cream with chocolate syrup for dessert. (Never thought of the ice cream and chocolate however he had problems way before eating that!)
Anything stand out as being a potential problem or is it something I need to look at the supplements for?
Thanks for any insight!

Hi Kimmers: Just to start, the instant quaker oats oatmeal with peaches and strawberries contain artificial colors such as FD & C red # 40, etc....these are very common triggers for the behavior you describe. The french toast (depending if you made it from scratch or is store bought) contains artificial food dyes and artificial flavors(store bought). The syrup is also full of artificial flavors and sometimes colors depending on the brand. I prefer to buy 100% pure maple syrup instead of the pancake syrups, you can find maple syrup right next to the regular pancake syrup(my son loves maple syrup), Lemonade bought from the store is also colored and flavored artificially. The chicken nuggets and fries, when bought frozen or in fast food chains, almost always are colored and flavored artificially. You can find some that are not colored or flavored but you have to read the ingredients very carefully and evenso, this may sometimes be misleading as sometimes the packaging itself is treated with a chemical preservative. So, as you can see most of what your son ate this week contained all of the fiengold NO NO's. Hope this helped you in some way.

Kimmers - Can you list the supplements you are giving your son? There may be a clue in there.
On possible food reactions, one thing I noticed is that many of the foods you listed contain or could contain corn syrup. There's the lemonade (definite corn syrup, and LOTS of it, unless homemade. Syrup (definite corn syrup unless pure maple expensive brand). Ice cream (highly probable), chocolate syrup (almost certainly) flavored oatmeal (likely). Even chicken nugget coatings often contain corn syrup, don't ask me why.
Corn syrup is one of the worst things for my boy to eat. It turns him into a complete unbearable monster and the reaction lasts for about a day and a half. We avoid corn syrup like the plague, despite the fact that it is extremely inconvenient to avoid, since almost every packaged food on earth seems to add corn syrup. You might want to try eliminating all corn syrup for a week and see what happens. Then let him drink a bunch of lemonade and eat a bunch of packaged cereal and see if the monster child reemerges.
Lemonade is a truly evil substance for my son. It causes some of his worst corn syrup reactions. It's how we tested his corn syrup reaction after eliminating all corn syrup for a week and -- WOW! Talk about tantrum boy. Ugly, ugly, ugly. Test it out.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Lots of things to think about... Cat, he is getting: *2 fish oil capsules, one in the morning and one at night *2 magnesium tablets given the same time as the fish oil for a total of 200 mg. *1 B 100% tablet given at night I have discontinued the Bugs Bunny multivitamin for now because of all of the artificial colors and flavors. The only thing that leads me to believe it is NOT the supplements is that we were having tons of success in all areas with minor problems and he had been eating all the same kinds of foods as always. It was just the end of last week and this weekend that he had all the problems. He was better yesterday until bedtime but I think he was overly tired. (Fell asleep on the couch way before bedtime-never happens!) I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to just quit complaining until we implement a Feingold diet/lifestyle! Kimmers
