TEXT :'(Dear Cat, I have read many post from you on this site and the old site and I know that you have listed many times what you give you child. I was hoping I could give you a list of what I am giving my son,9yrsold, 90 lbs. Can you tell me what else i should add or take away or try. He has been on Omega-3 (240 EPA, 200 mg DHA) I give him two a day, 1 in the morning and one at nite. Also a good chilrens mutli vitamin every morning, and one Evening Primrose oil (500mg) at nite. I also watch all the food and drinks that he takes. He is not hyper, his attention is getting worst. He has been on this for about 7 weeks now. I'm not seeing the improvement I thought I would. Can you give me some advice?? Thanks so much for taking the time.

Isn't it frustrating and depressing to try so hard and still not have things work the way they should? It just seems so unfair sometimes! And most people just don't understand how incredibly hard all this is. It can make a person feel downright lousy.
You don't mention a Vitamin E supplement. Does you multi-vitamin contain at least 100 IU of vitamin E? If not, you really ought to add a Vitamin E capsule of 100 IU. These are small and inexpensive. Using Omega-3 depletes the body's vitamin E, so make sure you are giving it some more.
Also, are you using magnesium? This is absolutely critical to brain function. At your child's weight, 540mg would be his exact dose. (No, you won't get it that exact, but it doesn't matter.)
Take a look at your multi-vitamin. Does it contain artificial colors or flavors that might be triggering bad behavior? This is really, really common for people to do, wanting to improve their child's nutrition and not realizing that the artificials in the vitamin (particularly chewables) are triggering episodes of bad behavior. If your vitamin contains artificials - switch! Immediately.
Check those things out. Give it a couple weeks to see if making some changes helps. Once you've got your boy leveled out again, you can try some further improvements like adding B-vitamins or DMAE. But don't change everything at once or you'll never know what works and what doesn't and what actually makes things worse.

I'm glad you're not giving up. It can take a while to really get things figured out and find what works. My son, who had been doing very well, had a week at school where for no apparent reason he did worse than he's ever done before. His papers were terrible and he was way hyper and he even got detention for the first time in his life.
I still don't know what the heck was going on. I'm watching allergy information at the moment, to see if it contributes, since that awful week was the major pollen week when the ragweed and juniper were both really high. But who knows. I may never figure it out.
If your boy seems to be having an especially bad day, try giving him a tablet of Alka Seltzer Gold in water. (Only the Gold, since it has no aspirin.) That occasionally helps my son if he is reacting to something, even if I can't figure out what.
Final thought - your son is pretty big, about the same size as my boy. You could easily add another Omega-3 capsule, and that might help. I know my son doesn't do very well if he's not on a pretty large amount. (He takes 4 capsules daily, each one has 120mg DHA and 180mg EPA, for a total of 480mg DHA and 720mg EPA every day.) We've tried switching to more concentrated types so that he can take fewer and smaller pills, and he does badly. Try more Omega-3.
I hope and pray you begin to see improvement. You keep posting, even if it's to blow off steam, so you'll remember you're not alone. We can all go crazy together.

Hey Cat, (Sorry for hijacking the this thread) I meant to thank you for posting that magnesium deficiency test on the FG board. Magnesium suppplementation has been heavily on my mind from reading all your posts, and the fact that DS doesn't like to swallow pills and all that, but thankfully when we did the test he had absolutely no upper lip twitch. Neither did I (whew). He did get a good laugh out of it, because I kept trying over and over. He was like "Are you nuts?!" *LOL* Any way it was a relief to rule that out.
I agree with you on this post that adding more fish oil would be a good thing. I started giving my DS 800mg in the morning, and 400mg at night recently and saw a big improvement. (Rather than 800mg divided between morning & evening) He's growing like a weed so it makes sense to up his dose.
Have a great weekend!
Take Care, Foley

Hi Cat ... Hey!! you are definitely in demand ... !! Just to let you know that a member named "Hopeful" put a question to you on the Meds board. I suggested that she may want to post it here in the Natural Meds but I don't think she's done this ..... so thought I'd let you know its there! Anne

AnneM - I'll check on the meds. (Not a section I visit very frequently.)
Foley - glad the magnesium test thing helped. I like that Feingold board. It's helped me out a lot.
