School has been back in session here three and a half weeks and my youngin' is doing good. She is getting up and getting ready on time and we have yet to have a mad dash to the bus stop barely making it. She is even doing this with the addition of doing her hair and make-up. I used to wonder if the day would ever come that she would start to care more about her appearance and it is here. She was up this morning at 5:30 am, dressed, straightening her hair, making up her face, making her own breakfast and packing her lunch, getting bookbag ready, then brushing her teeth with five minutes to spare. I made a point to tell her I am proud of her several times. The mornings go so much better like this! No arguing, just both of us doing our thing. I'm loving it! In addition to this, I had a SST meeting with her teachers yesterday. She seems to have a good set of teachers this year that seem genuine in their desire to help her. With the exception of two missed assignments that the teacher is allowing her to turn in late, all said she is doing well and her grades look good. In stark contrast to last year, things are looking up for my girl! I sure hope it continues!

Keeping our teens busy ...but not overly busy is the key here....they don't have time to think about anything else ;D ;D

I saw you said : With her having swim practice on top of homework every night
in your post. I was wondering what kind of swimming it was. Does she have to swim a long way during the practices? I took life saving when I was her age and we had to swim twenty-two laps before we started each time. I got in shape and strengthened up more during that class than any other time in my life. It changed my life.

I took life saving when I was her age and we had to swim twenty-two laps before we started each time. I got in shape and strengthened up more during that class than any other time in my life. It changed my life. George, she is on a swim team. They practice in an olympic size pool for an hour every night and they have " Dry land" warm ups for an hour prior. When swimming they alternate between strokes swimming several laps length wise each time. Again, this is two hours every night on top of homework, which she has been getting alot of! But don't get me started on THAT rant! Let me just say she got in bed later than normal last night and was upset that her "social life is being damaged" because she hasn't been able to call her boyfriend or girlfriends any school night for lack of time! Why do teachers feel the need for homework? Isn't them being at school all day enough? Oh! I said don't let me get started. This morning wasn't as smooth but she was understandably tired. Had I known before we left for the pool she had so much homework, we would have skipped practice. Then again, it doesn't seem fair for her to have to give up her extra-curricular activities to do more of what she's been doing ALL DAY already. Dang! There I go again! LOL Anne, I hope you are right about her being over the UGH phase. She will be 14 in two and a half months. I reaaly do see a lot of maturing in her.

It sounds like you guys really have a full schedule. The last school system I taught at had a rule that no homework could be given for grading purposes. The work students did at home was what the felt they needed to be successful. It made the teachers be responsible for making sure the students were learning every day and proving it during that day. It's more work than just throwing assignments at the kids and sitting back and watching them suffer. Maybe the idea could be introduced to you school system for adoption. I believe the person learning the material knows when they have learned what they need to and can be responsible for doing the amount of preparation necessary to pass their evaluation. It sounds like Cami is quite a champ. That is a really tough swimming routine. I wish you all the best. George
