ONE $3 BATTERY OPERATED SMOKE DETECTOR SAVED A $300,000 HOUSE!
Sunday morning we were getting ready for hosting our Boy Scout picnic. It has been in the high 90's all month, we are all tired hot and cranky. Air conditioners are running 24/7.
All morning long we kept smelling burnt toast or greasy grill smell, it wasn't really strong and consistent, but it didn't just go away either. Finally, at 11:30, I was bringing the Flavor Ice up from the downstairs freezer and DH calls to me, "there is a smoke detector beeping."
Drop everything and go outside to hear for myself, it is coming from the new next door neighbor's house. Now these people were RUDE to the previous owner, an elderly couple with a the DH being blind, so we don't like them even though we haven't met them yet.
Well, walking around the house, Shaun says "there is smoking coming out of the A/C unit in the front window." YES THERE IS!
DH, the former fire fighter, grabs his cell phone. I can see that there is fire on the stove, (they had left two pans on the stove turned on high ) and I know the lay out of the house, so I checked the garage door (attached garage) and it is cool. So I opened it up. Michael and I grabbed the brand new, with price tag still attached, leather sofa and pull it out into the yard. Shaun and Patrick started grabbing the smaller loose stuff while Michael and I went back and got the other 3 pieces of large furniture. We got out the high chair and some skis and a playpen filled with baby toys.
The police car showed up and I know him, so we started a quick walk around the house. When I realized he wanted to break a window to get in, I told him to get the dispatcher on the radio and gave him a phone # to call... that way he wouldn't add air to the fire before the fire department had water!
Anyway, I found the phone # for the new people on the "SOLD" tags on the furniture!
The first fire truck arrived and pulled their equipment to start working. I turned to cross the street out of their way, and my boys had moved ALL the ICE WATER and CUPS to a staging area on the driveway across from the fire! They KNEW the fire men were going to be really hot and that we had the supplies already prepared!
The good news... the fire department got the fire out without ANY water damage , and very little smoke damage. The family spent Sunday night in the house! And our picnic wasn't spoiled... although we had to call everyone to bring ice for the picnic... we used all of ours.

;)But my boys knew what to do without even being told!
And what I really enjoyed most... the from the middle school who I always fought with over Michael, and called the police on when she wouldn't dismiss Patrick...
she was on the fire scene with her son... the fire chief had to scream at her kid to get off the fire truck! My kids got THANKED!
And the new neighbors brought over a HUGE bag of Chinese food from their restaurant last night to thank us for being their neighbors! I guess I DO like them now, despite the first impression!
