I got to see a little of the show. They did a good job of sharing examples of different aged people/kids with OCD. I found it informative.
My oldest has some OCD symptoms--she cannot resist pulling her hair. It is so hard to watch. The more I ask her or remind her to stop pulling, the more she wants to do it. She is 14 yrs. with long gorgeous blonde hair. She also has some anxiety.

I recorded it and watched a little of it last night. That girl who started showing signs at 3 reminded me of my 4 year old son.The sand between the toes thing is alot like him.He has to do everything right. He's learning to write his letters and gets so mad if they're not perfect.

:)I checked The Jane Pauley Show website. My daughter falls into the parameters of someone with PANDAS. I saw the change around her 3rd b-day. She is 11 yrs now. She is being treated for OCD, GAD-generalized anxiety disorder and ADD. I have an appt. with her doctor to have the strep culture done, etc. as suggested by the article. Thanks for the information! I'll let you know what we find out. Coach

GOOD LUCK Coach !! Keep us informed!! I didn't see this show (particularly being in the UK) but the mention of "the sand between the toes" DEFINITELY hit home from when my son was younger!! ... I would be interested to know MORE about that ... What I can say is that my now nearly 17 year old used to HATE having sand between his toes when coming off a beach .... we spent many times with him trying to WASH IT ALL OFF ... Is THIS what the show was referring to? The thing I notice these days are that he is VERY protective about his footwear .... If he has new shoes on and they get one TINY LITTLE MARK (and I mean tinier than MY eye can see!) he is indignant ... and they have to be scrubbed .... Is THIS OCD? Same in fact with any new clothes ... the "first mark" is a huge inconvenience .... but strangely after that it isn't such a big deal at all ... and his clothes and shoes are THEN allowed to get old gracefully ... and it really doesn't bother him at all how dirty or marked they get once they are "old" clothes... But does THIS relate to what the programme was saying? Would love some more information on this ... (as someone who didn't get to see it!!) ...

I only got the text from the show's website, so I don't know what the sand in the toes was referring too either. It does sound like your son could be OCD from what you said. My d's symptoms before medication were obssessive thoughts (about sharks mostly), having to daydream and make motions with her hands in the air, and biting her nails and skin on her feet and hands until they bled. It affected her everyday life and made it impossible to function in school. All is much better now, but she still bites her nails and skin noticably. A change in meds didn't work, so I chose my battles. What is funny is she has a horribly messy room and doesn't care if her clothes are wrinkled, but textures or smells of food can make her physically sick. She is an amazing child with artistic talents. The truth is that OCD presents itself differently in different people, so it is hard to say if your son has OCD until you talk with a professional who can evaluate all his "quirks". Let me know what you find out! Coach

Anne, the little girls mom said she would scream and cry until all the sand was off.She would throw a tantrum if they were not completely clean. My son does that too.He also hates shoes unless they are too big because he has to be able to move all of his toes while wearing them.

anne, my son is also very obsessive when it comes to his shoes but like you said once he gets over that initial scoff mark he is ok with the shoes having normal wear and tear he does this with alot of things when he first gets them, it is definitly a symptom of ocd, my son has as textbook case of obsessional type of ocd. he takes lexepro for this and it helps tremendously.
