I havent gotten it all together just yet, but I do intend on posting some information I have learned, in dealing with my sd's autism (adhd, autistic, hearing impaired)... Anyway I wanted to share that I had a bit of a light bulb moment last night... I was watching "without a trace" and it had a missing autistic boy... There were scenes of the boy, and I just went "Hey that is like my sd!"... I have read many books on the subject, trying to learn what I can... I must be a visual learner though, because actually seeing another child exhibiting autistic traits, it just hit home... From the way he would run, the rocking, and not looking at the person they are speaking too, inappropriate reactions to a situation etc... It was really enlightening to me! Can we say denial? ;D cat

Cat,
I have been reading and researching Autism since Ds9 was duagnosed in April2004. He was dx with adhd when was 7. However his Psych. has told me that so many Autistic children have ADHD sx that they are diagnosed with Adhd first.
I have been on so many websites and jsut finished the book "The ADHD-Autism Connection" by Diane Kennedy. Have you read that one? It was very enlightening.
All 3 of my Auties are Visual learners. ( my 2nd child is not Autistic)And I have been noticing that some of my characteristics are the same. Funny huh?
Any info you have would appreciated and if I find any I will send you some.
Hve a peaceful day, Christina

Yep I read that one! It was insightfull, but like I said it was so much more interesting seeing it visually for me... I would love to some how see other autistic children in action, I really think we have been in a bit of denial since the diagnosis... What I am having the most trouble researching though, is the cause? I mean is it something that just comes on some how? Or were they born that way, and no one noticed it? I just see so many different theory's on it, one was maybe a certain child hood shot could bring it on... Then it goes on to say children as young as toddlers can be diagnosed, so I just dont understand I guess.. My sd was 8 when we got the autistic diagnosis, but only 5 for the ADHD... I have found this web site www.network54.com/Forum/259523 that is a "chat" type forum... It is interesting reading there... cat

Cat;
I know what you mean. I definately can get things better when I can see it.
We were in denial too. Wasn't till recently that I have come to terms with it. I have been talking with several organizations and geneticists. I have been really upset htat there is still no real answer to what causes autism. I have jsut started the family in an research study for families affected with Autism. Hope that can give some answers. The ASA has said that Autism is something a child is born with and affects each child at differing times, but then again so many parents say they never saw the cahracteristics until after shots were given. I don't know.
i do know the Dx was shocking to me until the Psych. showed me so many things I took for granted as being ADHD relate- like his bangin his head, picking his fingers until they bled, and acting as though he is ignoring me.
I still feel like I am treading water with this, I know I am not much help, but I am here to share and listen
Have a peaceful day, Christina

Ditto to what Amsmom said to both of you. You´re great mom´s. About that autism-MMR shot relation( I believe you´re refering to MMR-shot, measels, rubella and ..I forgot the 3rd one in english ...mum´s???) As I work at the preventive health care branch, I have to defend MMR-shot´s, no real relation has been shown in studie´s between MMR-shot and autism, but every one is free to think what they will about of this. I´ve learned that autism is in the child from the birth, the reason it´s not visible is that people are not able to see the trait´s of autism in a little baby, they come visble when the child should built up relationship´s to other peole etc.. Please, dont get offended about this, I didn´t mean it like that at all.

Marja;
No offense taken. Dh and I are both in agreement. Our children are not Auties because of vaccinations. We truly believe it is a genetic thing. I know many people believe vaccinations can cause the onset of Autism, but then I don't understand how one of my children does not have Autism or only has characteristics of it. He has all his shots. That is just our family opinion, not meant to change anyone view or hurt anyone feelings. I hope I don't.
