Hi; Just wondering if anyone has children with Autism and ADHD. If so, are you using a specific diet? Or behavioral remediies. I am having a confusing time treating both of these disorders because some of the treatments counter each of them. Thanks for reading, Have a peaceful day, Christina

Christina, I echo Amsmom, you are a terriffic MOM!!!!! ((((((((((hugs)))))))))) for that I work with a boy that has Aspergers. We have been through think and thin with him, sometimes it is very hard with his very straight lined everything needs to be fair for everyone personality. I'm not sure if he is taking any meds, but I think he is. Usually if he is having a hard time with anything, I ginore the ADHD and run with it from there. I have more understanding of the ADHD, so I can stand the running around or him hopping up and down while he is trying to explain something to me. I have found that swing has opened him up when he was first dx'ed. That's the only place he would talk to me. Still wouldn't look me in the eye, but he was able to get his thoughts together better. I know that his mom and dad don't let him have too much junk food, but to specifically eleminate anything, I remember her saying about red dye-but he has come in with fruit snacks, so I think it is onlt pertaining to drinks. I'll ask her more specifics in the morning when she drops him off. Take care

Hi christina, yes I have a child with autism (high functioning not quite asperbergers though) and ADHD... We dont use a special diet persay with sd, mostly because she is medicated for the adhd and well she needs very high calorie foods when/ if she does eat...
I guess I am a little confused on how you are trying to treat the autism, I was under the impression there isnt anything to treat it? So we are just tackling the ADHD which in reading more about autism, they seem an to be an awful lot alike...
Most of the behavior remedies we do, are for the adhd... Except the picture reminders... I have reminders for hygene (brush teeth, brush hair, wipe, flush (yes have to remind her! ARGH!)... The school has remider pictures for things like soft voices, dont pinch those types of things... This was a suggestion from the school, but I unfortunately dont see it working that well...

Oh Christina ... I wish I had more information for you!!....
But talking about the link between adhd and autism ... when my son was around 2 years old his childminder at the time thought he might be autistic .... so I can see that the two disorders DO sometimes entwine! ... As it turns out my son is not autistic and as he grew older this became clearer ... but i do know some of the symptoms can get confused especially in the early years.
I do NOT know this for a fact but I would think the dietary help for adhd would also be beneficial for autism, bipolar, ODD (etc etc) and also (so-called) "normal" children as well ... I think that the advice given in the natural alternatives section is excellent for EVERYONE.

An Update....
We have been working with organizations and have a much better understanding of Autism.
We also do not use a special diet for ds9 because we are in the same situation, have to eat hi caloric foods.
HE takes meds to control the ADHD and we use a picture schedule for all 3 of our kids with Autism.
Have a peaceful day, Christina

I'm quite confused, I posted (page 1) about the connection between ADHD and Autism. They aren't one and the same though, right? My ODD has ADHD and is on 18mg of Concerta which seems to help out quite a bit but we still have problems.

Hi keegansmommy ... and NO ... I don't believe for ONE MOMENT they are one and the same ... they are two TOTALLY separate disorders ... BUT can "run together" ... i.e. the child can have BOTH autism AND adhd ... (and possibly also ODD etc.etc.)
As you probably know adhd can be a "comorbid" condition to many other disorders and vice-versa ... BUT looked at individually they are totally different disorders but in a very young child some of the symptoms can get "confused" ... (IMHO)...
