School will be starting soon & I'm afraid my daughter will fall far behind! 4th grade is the beginning of more independent work & she still uses a # line & counts on her fingers! She can't seem to memorize math facts, although she DOES understand the process, she just can't put it to use! Her teacher last year let her use a times table chart for homework & I have a folder ready with tips for this years teacher. ;D Her school sends the teachers on home visits to each child a couple weeks before school starts & I'd like to have any info ready by then . Anyone have any suggestions that they have used & know to be effective? She came close to failing math last year even though it seemed we spent every spare moment at home on math! I'd appreciate any & all advice!

We have a similar problem with DS who will be starting 4th this year as well. He has no problem with the process and he has an excellent short term and long term memoryh. But he CAN'T seem to memorize the math facts. He does get his math done but it takes him twice the amount of time than the rest of the class. It is in his file by the special ed teacher that on all his testing he is average on math but his processing time works only at one speed and is slower than the norm. All of his math tests - he gets almost all of the answers correct but they are all timed and he only is able to finish about half to almost half of the test. I have a meeting with his 4th grade teacher for this and other problems right before school starts. I also am asking (for the millionth time since kindergarten) for a 504 accomodations that states he shall be graded on the questions he completes in the amount of time given - and will not be penalized for the questions he didn't get to. We'll see how it goes. Anyway - let me know what things are helping you dd this year!!!

Thanks for all the advice, links & suggestions!I found the link very informative.
I neglected to mention that my daughter is in a private school so there is no IEPs, etc. So far, the school has been very cooperative, but I believe its up to the individual teachers as far as what modifications they are willing to provide.
I will Do everything in my power to help my daughter & hope the school provides help this year as well!
