My ds8 has recently started manifesting a new series of OCD tics. He does these little jumps while he is sitting, takes a huge deep, exaggerated breath and makes a little lispy sound with his tongue and teeth. I had been ignoring them until last night. In the past, drawing attention to them made them worse and/or made him feel self-conscious. These are the first tics he has shown in over a year. It started a few weeks ago with the exaggerated deep breaths. Then he added the jumps last week. Last night he added the oral sounds. This morning he was doing all three. Last night I asked my ds very gently what he was doing and he said that his brain tells him to do these movements 3 times in a row. Classic OCD. I have downplayed it, as I don't want him to feel bad, but I am concerned. I don't want kids making fun of him. I'm going to call the dr today, but I wanted to see what you all say also. Thanks

Amsmom, the only tics I have seen with Brooke where when she was on certain stimulants. The tics stopped when she staarted Strattera.
I did notice with the tics that if I mentioned them, they seemed to get worse. Not exactly what you would expect from involuntary movement.
Brooke does not have OCD, so that probably doesn't apply to your situation or help.
I agree that calling the doctor is a good idea.
Is your son on any meds, if so what? Has there been any changes recently? Is he diagnosed OCD?

Hi Ralph, Thanks for writing. I spoke to his dr and he told me that these are not tics, because my ds can stop them when I gently tell him to. Also, his statement that his brain "tells" him to do it 3 times is very OCD. The dr has seen some OCD traits in ds before, but they haven't manifested in a long time. His primary dx is bipolar, secondary is ADHD. Poor kid can't seem to catch a break.

Oh bless him ... From what I understand I agree that this definitely sounds like ocd and not tics .... tics being involuntary movements and ocd being a compulsion to do certain things a certain number of times ... I wish I understood and knew more about it ... I believe Sam has a mild form of OCD but only because he can be so obsessive about certain things ... he doesn't have the rituals ... (but I also understand you don't HAVE to have the rituals to have OCD... ) ...
I am rambling a little because I know I am not being a lot of help here!! ... I hope others with more first-hand experience can give some better information!
GOOD LUCK RACHEL
