Anyone dealing with an anxiety disorder? Is anxiety anxiety or does it matter what kind of anxiety you have, i.e. social anxiety, which determines the medication, course of action? Also, what medications seem to work best for anxiety/ADHD? I've heard that Buspar is good. Anything else?

My dd 13 is taking zoloft with great results. Really helps her anxiety (she dislikes new and different situations, substitute teachers field trips, you name it).

swmom, I was just looking this up and found information on www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/medicate.cfm click on "antianxiety medications" and also on "Index of Medications" it will list types such as all the antianxiety meds for you to do a little investigating.

My 15 year old has generalized anxitey disorder which is an umbrella under which several other disorders fall. She has OCD and is currently using zoloft, but has also used other SSRI's. It has worked well for her anxiety/depression but you really need fairly high levels to get to the OCD, which I am not too happy about. Several SSRI's (mostly Paxil) have recently come under attack for causing suicidal thoughts in children. I hear buspar is pretty good and we are considering it to give the zoloft a little "kick".

Buspar has been great for my adhd/anxiety son. However, he still has most of his adhd symtoms. It took something like 6 weeks to start to show any promise. In that department, it's been great.

My 5 yr old also has Anxiety Disorder and ADHD. He takes Remron for his anxiety. It has really made a difference as far as the anxiety goes (new situations, changes in routine, etc.). We know for a fact that it works because due to a problem at the pharmacy he was "off" of it for about 3 school days and from the way he acted, the teacher said you would have thought it was his first day of school!
Hope this helps!

Does anyone with an anxious child find that the SSRI drugs make the child more hyper but more flexible and happier? He made more friends then, too. That's how my son was on Paxil. He's off it now. lisle
