Amsmom, When you get a chance to go to the library, one more book I forgot to mention that is not to be overlooked is YOUR MIRACLE BRAIN by Jean Carper. Till then something to keep you busy on the web ... you can see the National Institute of Health website www.nih.gov/ type in the search words omega 3 fatty acids. I wish I was more computer savvy and familiar with these sites. I know the books I recommended have hundreds of refrences to scientific articles. To me there is nothing like a book. I even like the smell of them, the texture and to hold it in my hand. One of the best people in this department of research on the internet we have right here on this forum. Send Catatonic a personal email or if she sees this post I know she can contribute much to help with this subject. She hangs out in the Natural Alternatives section and is well versed on this subject.

Thanks ohmama, but I'm really not ready to get deeper into the omega 3 issue. I'll just read what I can on the internet for now. Thanks for your concern and advice.

Ohmama, amsmom -
I read an article somewhere, perhaps it was on a bipolar website, about how this doctor, I believe it was Dr. Stoll, was very successfully treating bipolar with huge amounts of omega 3, like 10 grams a day or something like that. I believe the article said that he had found this to be more effective than any of the current medications used to treat bipolar. His findings were based on the research into why Asians have almost no cases of bipolar. It is because they eat such an incredibly high amount of fish, which contain those omega 3 fatty acids.
Has anyone else seen this article? It might have been on bpkids.org.

SWmom, I haven't seen the article but Dr. Stoll's book is outstanding. His dedication and research have been an incredible breakthrough in treating this terrible disorder. If you liked the article you will love the book (The Omega-3 Connection). It is loaded with his findings on the use of omega 3. He gives dose information as well. It is also very informative on ADHD and other brain disorders. I hope more people will take the time to look into this.
In the book he takes a very reasonable approach and does not recommend anyone stop taking their medication. The omega 3 is something that can be used to work with the meds and hopefully a reduced dose or eventually in some cases an elimination to meds. I found it very interesting that he treated people who were resistant to the effects of meds but responded to the Omega 3 treatment. I think the average dose was 4 to 6 grams? Anyway, it is worth looking into if anyone is interested.
