How close is OCD and ODD? I am in the early stages of learning. My son is four and was recently (officially) diagnosed with ADHD. This week we are also hearing OCD. I was already wondering about ODD, but now think the dr is on to something with the OCD diagnosis. Looking back on things it makes sense.

OCD and ODD are two different disorders...Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. The symptoms are quite different, but may also be suffered by one who has ADHD.

Yes I agree with Struggling Again. OCD is marked by "compulsive" behaviour - often almost a "ritual" .... doing something over and over and over again .... feeling they HAVE to do a certain thing in a certain way - possibly time after time ....
ODD on the other hand is defiant and oppositional behaviour. Always saying or doing the opposite to that which they are asked to do .... Constantly taking a "no" stand and a defiance of any type of authority.
They are two totally different things BUT some children can certainly have BOTH disorders simulataneously.

Yes, OCD and ODD are two different disorders but I think sometimes OCD can either lead to or be mistaken for ODD. DS gets into these things where he has to have something "RIGHT NOW!!!!!" and it's really awful, especially when it's 4:30 and I'm making dinner and he thinks he must have a toy he saw at the store or something. But I've come to believe there's more of an obsessive quality about this than just defiance. (I know, all kids do this, but if you think, "What's the big deal, all kids do this," your kid doesn't do what my kid does.) Anyway. I saw a link at Leslie Packer's site about behavioral therapy that gave me a different view to all this. It's a good article. You might look at it. www.tourettesyndrome.net/behavior_former_ratrunner.htm So I'd say your kid could have both disorders and they could each make the other tougher for you to live with your kid. Or he could have OCD but react very defiantly when his ritual is interrupted. In any case, DS's defiance is better when he's on Prozac, which theoretically could help with OCD issues. Christie
