Scarlet and welcome to our forum. To answer your question, I need to ask you to be a bit more specific, like: what med´s are you talking about, the dosage, how long have those been used etc. For us, ds using Concerta, there were no severe side effect´s, only little lack of apetite and problem´s falling at sleep first. With stim´s you hear about the lack of apetite wich can be quite severe, the problem falling to sleep, stomach ache´s, mood change´s..... they usually get better by few week´s and if not you should think the med´s all over again, you might have the wrong one/dosage for you... Please tell us more about what, how much and why... so we are able to help you more...

Hi and welcome...I love your user name Are you talking about yourself or your child? Sometimes you get lucky with your first med try(we did) Like marja concerta worked for us...In the beginning the appetite slacked off some. It also depends on the meds....what works for one person might not work for another.

Hi, thanks for your quick replies I'm not gearing towards anything specific...I guess I just want to know in general. One of my best friends has adhd and bulimia (she's on prozac for her bulimia related depression) and I have unmedicated adhd.

Hi scarlettdecember and welcome!! As the others have said it is difficult to give an indication of side-effects without knowing more detail about what meds we are referring to or dosage etc... All I can say is that my son Sam (who is now 17) has been on Concerta for 3-4 years ... he has OCCASIONALLY over the years complained of a stomach ache or a headache but only when he has started the medication after a break ... apart from that I have to REMIND him of whether he is on the meds or not ... NOT because they aren't helping him but because he has had NO other side effects and "feels in himself" the same whether he is on them or not on them!! ... He says that the one thing he really notices is that if he needs to DO SOMETHING which requires concentration and sitting still (i.e. this is obviously particularly in an academic or classroom environment!) ... it just seems a WHOLE BUNCH EASIER on meds than not on meds!! ... Not sure if that helps ... Are you getting a diagnosis at all? Are you seeing a doctor or planning to? GOOD LUCK and its good to see you here!!

For stimulant based meds, which are your better known ones like Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta, general side effects are loss of appetite and trouble falling asleep, sometimes mood changes can be involved, and stomaches. Good remedies for all includes eating a good breakfast before taking the med (this helps with weight loss you could have due to loss of appetite and also helps prevent stomachaches since pill isn't taken on an empty stomach), and taking Melatonin (a natural sleep aid you can pick up at places like GNC). If you have the severe mood changes the med is probably not right for you and you would need a change. Everyone is different so what works for one may not another...sometimes it is hard to find the med that is right for you sometimes you may get lucky and find it on first try, sometimes you have to play around with dosages some before you get it right. Just keep that in mind when you start the journey.
For stimulant meds there is also sometimes a "rebound" time you will endure when the medicine starts to wear off. At this time you can be even more hyper than normal and maybe even moody and temperamental. Times like this my dd can become a little annoying to her friends...so it is good to let them know about this so they will be more understanding during that time. LOL
Most all medicines have websites that will list side effects so you maybe able to find more there. You can also check on drugs.com and type in the name of a medicine you are curious about in the search box. It will then list info about that medicine.
I hope that helped you some.
