Tracy and welcome to our family. I was just as scared about ritalin too....so much in fact that I kept Paul home from school(6 at the time...now 17) because I didn't know what effect the meds would have on him. Turns out it was the best thing we ever did. It worked very well for him. We switched to Concerta in middle school because it lasted longer...now at 17 he doesn't take meds anymore and is doing fine.

My son is on Concerta with a dose of Ritalin in the afternoon if he needs it. He hasnt had any problems with either of those.
Just watch him. You know how your child normally is. If he starts boucing off the walls or her personality changes dramatically, then call the dr.
What part of Mo are you from? I grew up in St. Charles county.

mom2dylan, welcome to our forum family! we know how you feel and are here for you. my ds9 is not able to take stimulants, he is on other meds for his adhd/mood disorder, but i know very well how scary it is to try any meds. unfortunately, uninformed people will use scare tactics against meds. giving meds is never an easy decision, but as long as it is done under a dr's supervision, it doesnt have to be so scary. many parents on this forum have had great success with ritalin or similar meds, they can make such an incredible difference in our childrens' lives. take care and come back often. we understand.

Let us know how it goes. You should see results from the meds in about an half hour.

mom2Dylan, good luck i hope it´ll work....although, I think that with stim´s it´s eather/or, you should see the result´s quite soon....keep us posted, please. And, please, do not worry too much about ritalin being leathal it has been on market over 30 year´s and it´s propablythe best tested drug for adhd there is, at least the longest tested My ds9 had ritalin 5 mg as an afternoon doze for about 6 month´s, he did fine with it.

welcome tracy! don't let anyone scare you about ritalin. my daughter started on it in 2nd grade and it was like a miracle! also remember that if it doesn't work right or eventually doesn't work right, changing the time of day meds are given or the dosage can fix the problem. sometimes you may need to try something new. every kids reacts differently and you'll know the best except possibly for a teacher if he was in school. people do worry about growth problems but dd is the average height of 5'5". they seem to catch up eventually. this is a great place to vent and for help. my dd just turned 20. sure wish it had been around when she was dylan's age. karen

Don't worry about the drug being deadly. I am 35 and was on it when I was little and I turned out OK, well, depending on who you ask. lol. Sometimes I wish people that know nothing adout ADHD would just keep their "well meaning" comments to themselves.
