Hi my dd has just started ritalin la 20 mg today. we were n adderall , but due to possible complications we stopped it. It had worked well for her. ANyway, it only seemed to work about 8 hours today and she was very hyper afterwards, had a melt down getting a bath . SHe is 6. Now she had had meltdowns occasionally on the adderall also. SO thats nothing new but Id like to know if 8 hrs is about how long its suppose to last. ANd, also anyone here doing supplements with the ritalin? ANd if so , what kind. I just started a larger dosage of omegas in her diet and have had her on magnesium. Id like to find something that would help with the moodiness. THanks for any suggestions. Lisa

My ds is nine and is on 40mg of Ritalin LA. He's on a very high dose because it only lasts four hours. I would LOVE a med that lasts eight, but his metabolism eats it up. His dx is Severe ADHD and ODD. He takes Ritalin LA 40 mg, twice a day; Clonidine, Risperdal and Focalin. He's been taking Ritalin LA for about two years and we've had better luck with it than with anything else.

dd was on ritalin la for a few years, only 20 mgs but probably should have been more. she took a 5 mg booster after school for homework. i didn't think it really lasted much longer than the regular ritalin of the same mgs. good luck, i know how finding the right medicine can make such a difference. karen

Ju,ping in late on this one (sorry!) but I have to say it all depends on how each individual child metabolizes the medicine as to how long it will last. The long actings were made to last up to twelve hours but it doesn't do that with all kids. I have found with mine it used to be around nine hours, but recently I have been getting reports from her last period teacher that she seems distracted in her class. I give Cami her Ritalin LA (she takes 60 mgs) when we leave the house in the morning at 6:45. When she gets home from school at 4:00, her attention is already out the door. On heavy homework nights, she takes a small dose of short acting Focalin to get her thru.
Finding the right med or combo of meds is not always easy. You just have to keep tweeking until you get there. I wish you luck.

We haven't tried Ritalin LA but my son has been on Concerta for 3 years ... and at times it was suggested by his Doctor that he should take a "regular ritalin" as a "top-up" when he returned home from school ...particularly to see him through the homework time ... Just a thought but might be worth asking your doctor if this is acceptable or a possible idea to just prolong the working time?
GOOD LUCK !!!
