My son just started on Adderall XR yesterday. He is 7 yrs old. How long do the side affects last before they normally go away. I noticed last night he had no interest in eating and still this morning I had to make him sit down and eat a slice of toast before school. He also could not sleep last night, he had me up every few hours. I know this was only his first day but I wasn't sure how long before the intial side effects should go away? The plus side to the medicine is that he is not nearly as hyper as he was. He even noticed a difference in his behavior at school. And at home he was an angel. So I truely hope the side affects will get better. Thank you so much for your help, this is the first time I've posted on this forum...it was a hard decision to put him on medicine to help control his ADHD...I feel like I should try better as a parent to control it myself. But then again, I am doing the best I possibly can so I try to tell myself not to feel guilty.

Hi and welcome to our online family First of all there is not much you can do about the ADHD. It has nothing to do with bad parenting.....look on both sides of the family and I am sure you will find someone just like your son The side effects are different for each child but it does seem to be working for your son and that is great. The side effects should be better in a couple of weeks....if not then call your doc. Don't feel guilty...we have been there...and it IS a hard decision to try meds.....Linda

My DS is in 8th grade and has been on Adderall XR since second. He does not take the meds during summers, and when we start we go thru the side effects for a few days. We have also had wonderful luck with Adderall XR. I found that DS usually eats later at night, so I am sure I have some reall good snacks on hand, or things I can make quickly. chunky soups, spagetti O's, tunafish sandwiches. Luckily for me both my kids love raw veggis with ranch, and fruit, so that makes a wonderful snack for them. HE also eats us out of house and home when he is not on his meds. Because DS is inattentive adhd, we do not medicate on weekends either, so He really eats then.

My sd has been on adderall xr for 2 years... I combat the lack of eating, by feeding sd ALOT before she take the medicine... As for the not sleeping well, sd never really has slept well, even before medication... We just make sure she has lots of running time to hopefully wear her out!!
I dont believe this is a parenting issue AT ALL!! My son is nothing like my sd was at his age, and they are both being raised the same... To me it is proof we, as parents, didnt do something wrong...
I know how hard that first step is, and going the medication route... I have been there too, but we all have to do what will work best for us, and our kids who are all different...
We have an appt with the dr on March first, it will be a med review... We are thinking of going a different route...

My 8yo son has been on adderall xr for about a month. I explained to him that a possible side effect was that he would not be very hungry, and that it is very important to eat anyway. He does not have much appetite, but is trying to cooperate. I sometimes give him carnation instant breakfast with his regular breakfast, instead of plain milk. I also switched back to full fat milk instead of 2%. Every little bit helps... As far as sleeping, it has been difficult. He gets up at 6:30 for school, and the first week of meds had him up until 10:30 or 11:30 every night. I finally figured out that if I didn't force him to go to bed and "just lay there", we had a better chance. Now I let him stay up and do a quiet activity such as reading or legos, and try to get him to bed between 9:30 and 10:00. This seems to work out much better. We also take weekends off meds, and even though I intend on letting him make up sleep, we end up late anyway Good luck! The first week was rough, but we all have seen a big difference on meds (me, him and his teacher). It's been going well
