Have you heard about the Adderall xr recall in Canada? cbs4boston.com/Healthwatch/health_story_041123016.htmlwww.wjla.com/news/stories/0205/206597.html I have a medical background (cardiac in particular) and I am not going to jump to any rash conclusions. DD has been on this medication for 3 weeks and it has helped her so much in such a short amount of time. I am just very disheartened to be finding out about this info. just as we are seeing such benefits. That coupled with the FDA's track record has me a little bothered. We have a pediatricians appt. on 2/23 so we will definitely be having a discussion about this.

???Hi this caught my eye, now Im not sure I should be worried. Mydd who is 6 has been on adderall xr now for about 6 months and doing well on it she gets 10 mg daily. SHe had major heart defets, structural. as a baby but had had corrected surgery. Her cardiologist and other drs know she is on this med. If there was a concern wouldn't they have told me? ? WHat are the other stimulint meds in the same family of adderall. SHe was on concerta and it didn't seem to help, the same with strattera. The adderall seems to be helping thou. ANy thoughts ? Thanks Lisa

Sarahsmom; I think ritalin is the same med-family that adderal and concerta.
This new´s was brought to me by Alla, in her thread in general section, I think..... sound´s like canadian healt-department is jimpign a gun in here.... ???But it is, ofcourse, worth talking with your doc when possible.

I haven't been here for a while. My 8yo is on Adderall XR and has been for a year now with some breaks (summer, Christmas, etc.) and is doing fantastic. The recall information I heard was very sketchy and I wondered if any of y'all had heard anything more specific. For instance, the dosage level? I remember when they recalled Vioxx, the problems were with a specific dosage. Thanks for any further information.

Sarahsmom; I think ritalin is the same med-family that adderal and concerta. Ritalin, Ritalin la, Concerta, Metadate CD and Focalin belong in the Methylphenidate family. Adderall and Adderall XR belong in a different family the - Amphetamine family (DEXTRO-AMPHETAMINE-LEVO-AMPHETAMINE) Here's a link that explains the various meds: www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/add_adhd/adhd_medications_update.html

Sarahsmom, with a heart defect, I would be very careful of ALL stimulants and strattera. Even Ritalin can cause death where there is a pre-existing heart defect. I am not trying to scare you. But what you have to do is have the doctor regularly monitor your child's heart and BP. Regular (every few months) EKGs, Echocardiogram etc. is important.

Hi I called dd's dr on tues about the recall and she advised me to take her off. Knowing she had a terrible rebound effect several months ago when we tried a drug free weekend, I am weaning her off till we get the subcrip for retilin la. Does anyone use the ritlan la? how long does that last? SHe will be getting 10 mg's. Her cardiologist seems to say she would be fine with the stimulants. ALthough that one responce has me a bit worried. At least with ritilan there is a long track record on it. SHe was on concerta (in same fam) and didn't help much. I suppose the ritlan acts differatly somehow so it might be of help. Im a bit worried about the whole thing. THanks for the responces. LIsa

I had my son in to see the doc for allergies. I talked briefly with him concerning the adhd meds. I was mentioning that at the beginning of the school year I wanted to start back down at the lowest level of concerta. (DS was still not completing school work at the end of school year. We had gone from 18 to 54 mg during the school year.) He said maybe we should consider adderal this coming year. I've been reading the adderal threads on the boards. I just want to clarify what I'm reading. This recall seems to be for adderal XR. So if the doctor suggests adderal vice adderal xr, I don't need to be concerned about the sudden death risk thing?

I *think* the only reason it is adderall xr in canada, is because they dont use just plain adderall... It would be both if they had both there...
Also I think the difference between the two, is that adderall xr is extended release (last for the whole day), just plain ole adderall doesnt last as long...
Either way bring up your concerns and the recall, when discussing with dr... If he cant calm your fears (my sd is still on adderall xr, but we will be weaning later this summer), go with your gut and ask about other medications.... Good luck!

Thanks cat for the info. I don't like the sounds of adderal. He was complaining of chest pain on the concerta so I'm pretty sure he'd have the same problem with adderal. What do the school's do if you can't find a medicine that works? It's so not fair for these kids! Just maybe the omega and magnesium treatment will help him out enough to get by.
