i don't normally come to this part of the board. dd hasn't been taking her meds for a couple of years. she went and took a fairly new test called QB. she got the results today and she is adhd both. no??? really? they have put her on xr adderall which we have no experience with. she's always taken ritalin and it worked fine. but i had questions about dosage and side effects. i knew the people on this board would know the answers! just by going thru the posts, i already found many of the answers i was looking for. thanks all! karen

My son is on Adderal XR and hasnt had any side effects other than its harder for him to fall asleep. I have heard other people say their kids tend to get "weepy".

i tried to talk to her about what i had read on here but she was too busy talking about various other things to listen! i will let you know how it goes. one thing i don't know, is this like ritalin where it's in and out of your system or does it take time to build up? TIA karen

The adderal xr shouldnt need time to build up. It is one of the meds that should last about 12 hours and then wear off. I was told that I can skip weekends and vacations if I want.

GOOD LUCK KAREN !! .... From my understanding adderall is also a "stimulant" as is Ritalin. You can therefore expect (I believe!) a similar experience ... some say (as kurs10b point out) that adderall can make their kids more emotional ... but then again so can ritalin... the length of time it works for and the "way" it works is also pretty much identical ... GOOD GOOD LUCK and keep us posted PLEASE!!

Hi Karen, DD was weepy and more spaced out than ever on her starting dose of 5 mg xr. Once she went up to 10 mg, it was like a switch was flipped and I started getting all kinds of excellent feedback from her teacher and Brownie leader regarding her ability to attend and follow instructions as well as how much better she started getting along with her peers. The down side has been her lack of appetite. She has been on it for 3 weeks and her pants are starting to fall off of her! I just bought some Pediasure to pack in her lunchbox so we'll see if that helps. I had asked her teacher to let the lunchroom parapros know that she needs to eat and she said she would, but DD is still bringing home full lunchboxes everyday. Other than this, this medication has been great for us. Good luck!

thanks to all of you for the information. i'm not sure what the prescription is for. we haven't been able to get it filled yet. turns out it's not on the approved list with our insurance co. so the dr. has to call the insurance who has to call the pharmacy. and the script runs out tomorrow because it's been a week! the dr. has been faxed and called from the pharmacy and me. they told me they would call the insurance that very day. but haven't heard from the pharmacy. will call tomorrow morning and find out if it's been approved. i assume not since the insurance companies rarely work that fast. but i'll keep you informed. thanks again for all the wonderful info. sure hope she doesn't lose much weight. she doesn't have much to lose. hmmm.... maybe i could try it? ? well it's a thought, i sure could stand to lose a person or two!! karen

With Canada recalling adderal could it be the insurance companies are running scared a bit?

i picked up her meds today!! i had called the insurance co and they had no info that the dr. had called. however we've recently gotten new insurance for meds. they gave me the number and i called and left a message with the dr. about who to call. the pharmacy called today and told me the prescription was ready to pick up! wow! i was surprised because the week was up last monday. i figured we'd have to go pick up another 'script once the insurance ok'd it. but it was waiting for us with us doing nothing else. she'll start tomorrow i hope and see what happens. wish us luck! karen

Update. well we finally got dd on the adderall xr. took a couple of weeks for it to get thru the insurance. i know she doesn't take it everyday and i don't normally see her until evening most days so it's worn off, i'm sure. i have seen no change at all. we went away this weekend so i took it with me and she took it so i was around her all day and still saw no difference. she told me she couldn't tell any difference either. she said she could tell some when taking ritalin but when she took it a few years ago, she couldn't tell then. just had to cancel her dr. appt since i can't get her there, she lost her license for three months, another whole story. so she'll need to reschedule and hope it's soon so she can start taking the right stuff, whatever that may be. karen
