DD has been on her new meds for 2 days now, Adderall xr 5 mg. She goes up to 10 mg next week. I know I shouldn't jump to conclusions, but I am already wondering if 10 mg will be enough, 5 mg definitely isn't and I'm not sure I want to wait a week. For one thing, I spoke to DD's teacher, who was unaware that we'd started the meds, and she said DD's focus was worse than ever, especially today. Then I went to join DD at her Brownie meeting and she had a complete meltdown, sobbing hysterically and demanding to go home. She's a sensitive kid, but it's not like her to lose it in the middle of an activity or meeting like this. She said that everyone was being mean to her and that she wanted to quit Brownies. The troop leader said she was doing fine until I walked through the door. We got home and younger DD, who's been sick, peed on the sofa. She is also carrying on because her stomach is cramping but she refuses to go to the bathroom because she is afraid of diarrhea (and I'm medicating the older one). Then the stupid dog peed on the stairway. And now I am crying and having a little pity-party for myself. Sorry, I know this is trivial and will pass. I am just feeling negative and am having doubts about how well medication will work for us, especially when I hear that if a certain med is going to work, it's going to work right away. Thanks for letting me vent.

Erin, I know with us the Adderall was immediate. Is this behavior "out of the norm" for her? If so, then I would get with the doc about it. It could very well mean she needs more... or it could mean she needs another all together. Welcome to the wonderful trial and error period.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Erin ... I hope you don't mind that I moved this to Medication .... because it sounds like you have had a ROTTON NO-GOOD day!! I understand that Adderall can cause children to be very emotional at first .... HOPEFULLY this upset was a "settling down" symptom ... especially if your daughter has only been on it for a couple of days. However, I would keep an eye on this because if it persists you certainly don't want to swap better concentration for an unhappy child!! ... IF you can ... I would advise that you wait the week and then see if the Dr wants to up the dosage .... because it does sound like your daughter is getting some emotional side-effects right now and a too-soon increase could perhaps accentuate this... HOWEVER, it does concern me that the report from the teacher said that her focus was "worse than usual" ... As Camismom said ... this just MIGHT NOT be the right med for your DD ... and might be part of the trial and error system ... Don't be afraid to try something else if it doesn't appear to be working .... The stims don't work for everyone!! GOOD GOOD LUCK !! Please keep us posted!!

Thanks for the hugs and all, yesterday was a really cruddy day. I explained to DD this a.m. that she might be feeling a bit down towards the end of the day as she is adjusting to her meds and told her to tell me about these down times when they happen, especially if they get worse. She was in a pretty good mood when she got off the bus this afternoon, but did say that she felt a tiny bit like crying (but didn't) toward the end of the school day. She said that nothing bad happened to make her feel that way and the feelings passed on their own. I guess I will wait to see if we have anymore unpleasant episodes before deciding whether or not to call the Dr. and see if we can increase the dose sooner. Maybe 10 mg we start next week will make a difference, I am a little more hopeful today. Anyways, I guess this is my welcome into the world of medication trial and error. I just really want the Adderall to work. Younger DD's stomach issues are resolving, which is also making today an easier day.

Contacted the Drs office today. Now we're going to try 10mg tomorrow instead of next Monday. I'm crossing my fingers...

Erin from me too. Sound´s really like this is a rebound from starting adderall, That´s only from what I´ve read from here, we have no personal experience of adderal. When ds started Concerta, he had those meltdown´s too, but those did past in about a week or two, nothing anymore, he´s been on med´s for a year now. Like Linda, Anne and Christy pointed out, it´s a triell and error ll the way, but you´ll never know if you dont try it.
