I have a dilemma and the doctor is just starting to see we keep hitting a brick wall. He has been trying to prescribe something for my son to sleep at night. No matter what meds he gives him they make my son so hyper. Its like he is getting jet fuel intravenously. He doesnt burn out until after 11pm. He is up early then goes and goes and goes. Im also getting burnt out. He wants me with him. He says he is bored...... I have to play with him, sit with him, and entertain him until he burns out. If I don't his aggitation is triggered. He is on Seroquel during the day and we are slowly switching him to Abilify because he is gaining weight too rapidly. He is Bipolar/Adhd so we have to be careful with the med. Im so frustratedcc and I see the doctor is very surprised at his reaction to meds that would normally knock out an elephant. He is 9 and only weighs 80 lbs. but seems to metabolize meds very rapidly. Anybody experience this or have any ideas I can suggest to the doctor?

hi franksmom, my ds8 is also bipolar/adhd. he takes elavil to help with sleep and it also helps his mood. we started w/ 25 mg and he is now on 100mg. it works like a miracle to help him sleep (knock wood). the dr told me on our last visit that he wanted to raise it from 75 to 100 b/c it also helps with focusing, which sounds fantastic to me!!! it's too early to tell if it helps the focusing, but it has been great for sleeping and mood. he also takes depakote for mood stabilization and risperdal for aggression. i hate that he has to take 3 meds, but i can see with his disorders that he needs the combination. good luck and keep us posted.

Hi franksmom! My ds is nine, but small for his age. He has taken Clonidine for years to help him sleep, and be calmer. It works wonderfully for him. For adults, Clonidine is a blood pressure medication, but for children it helps them sleep. It sounds like BOTH of you need some sleep desperately!!

Thank you so much for the advice...I will mention it to the doctor. When I asked him what he could do for "Mommy Burnout" he chuckled and said "Take a vacation". Of course he knows thats not an option for us right now so he said maybe(wraparound). But Im not sure if we can get that. I will look into it!

Sleep is something we have always had problems with. Even as a small child my son had trouble getting to sleep, but also trouble waking up. At 19 he still has very erratic sleep patterns. When he was taking meds, he took clonidine to help him wind down and it literally knocked him out within 30 minutes so we had to time the dose carefully so all homework was done, ect.
He stopped all meds at 13 so we have tried a few things in recent years that were herbal. One was valerian - however if your child has "smell issues" that can be a tough one since it smells like dirty sweat socks. Now he uses a calcium/magnesium mixture with melatonin. That works when he remembers to take it. I know a lot of people that have found melatonin to be a lifesaver. Also, we found that a protein shake at night helps him walk up easier in the morning.

I think there is less liklihood of problems mixing herbal teas with meds than mixing them with other meds. I know the meds they use with bi-polar can be very strong with many harsh side effects. So I would say finding an herbal solution for the sleep might be a better option than adding on another med with more side effects. I know many people on anti-depressants that take valerian or melatonin to help with sleep and have no interaction issues. Ask you doctor about it and also check online to see if there have been interactions reported between those 2 specific things. Good luck and remember that a nice, hot bubble bath can make a great mini-vacation. Specially if you add eating a chocolate bar (" ")
