After a horible 14 months dealing with my DS on Adderall XR and short acting Adderall we are about to try Ritalin SR. The Adderall caused awful rebound with depression, rages, withdrawn personality and a daughter I no longer recognize. I long for the happy child I once knew.
She has just recently overcome a huge fear of swallowing pills and is still scared of anything in capsule form so we are going with the SR instead of Ritalin LA. I am hoping someone out there has had some success with this drug because we are losing hope fast.

Yes, I have heard those kinds of rebound stories many times with respect to Adderall. I think the Ritalin SR should be different, though, and not have those rages and what not. I wish you luck.

I have heard the same stories about adderall...but I know very little about ritalin SR....I know about the regular ritalin be cause that was the first med that Paul was on...but he sometimes had rebound...not severe,he would get weepy...then we switched him to concerta and didn't have any more problems.

Dallasmom, I'm a Houston mom :>)
My ds is nine and has been on Ritalin LA for a couple of years. His Ritalin LA is in capsule form. If you think it would work better for your child, don't be afraid since it isn't a tablet. He also takes three other medications along with the Ritalin LA, but for now, the combination is working. It seems that it takes some time for almost any of these medications to have their full effect. Try not to be scared, but patient.

Hi Dallasmom I´ve also heard about adderal´s side-effect´s, sound´s like those are quite common with it. I dont know about ritalin sr, but my son has been on regular ritalin (to help him get through afternoon´s at school) for this fall, and so far it has been great. He is on concerta 18mg+ritalin 5mg, only thing I´ve noticed is that he get´s a little weepy at time´s, but not so often. I wish you good luck with this

My dd also did horrible on Adderall. Ritalin is the med that has always worked well for her. She has taken it in all forms... short-acting, SR and LA. The only gripe I have about it is the "rebound" effect that we get when it starts wearing off. Try not to let it bother you. I know it's hard, but we just have to keep trying until we find what's right for our child.

dallasmom, i understand how difficult it is trying out new meds after such a horrible experience with the adderall. my ds8 is not able to take stimulants, as they all increased his negative behaviors (adderall and ritalin included). i would suggest that you tell the dr you dont want to wait a long period of time if your daughter is having a negative reaction to the ritalin. many kids do well, however, on other stims when they didnt do well on adderall. best of luck to you, please keep us posted!
