My DS takes 20 mgs. of Adderall XR. I am wondering from those who have used various meds...Did you notice that the Adderall caused more aggitation than say Ritalin? We have never tried any other med yet ,but my son is very aggitated and has a short fuse when on the Adderall..do you think that is possible or could it be something else?

my son has been on both aderralxr and ritalin. ritalin is much better for hi. he is more even keyed, not as moody, as he was on adderal. aderral also made him more "zombie like '. he is much more himself on ritalin just calmer

Thanks crillmom, I had a feeling that it might be that way. I have to talk to the doctor and see if he will change him. The most difficult time I have is the moody, aggitated, >:(disagreeable times. ( and that is usually everyday after he takes his meds!!!) Im so glad there is hope!

My DS 14 was on Adderall XR for a few years, and I can't tell you when it started, but toward the end he was going through what I called the Incredible Hulk end of the day let down as the Adderall wore off. He got ugly, violent, nasty, foul...
He took Strattera for a while after that, but his migraines got so bad we had to take him off all meds.
I am thinking about asking the doc to give him a trial on Ritalin, since I haven't heard of the violent tendencies with it. Daniel described his sense of time passage very well on the adult thread, and since my DS is already 5'10 and looking very adult, I just think it might benefit him to try meds again... Now how do I get him to agree to a trial... ODD is a problem with him. I think I will see if we can get him a trial during the holiday break.
I will watch this thread to see what others think.

tridlette I think we are also dealing with the ODD issue -although no one has actually diagnosed it. I wonder if the ritalin helps with that at all?

tridlette I think we are also dealing with the ODD issue -although no one has actually diagnosed it. I wonder if the ritalin helps with that at all? I am at the point where I think that anything will help! It seems as though not much could be made worse than where he is at right now! He decided he wants to go to Penn State for college... but he heard he needs a 3.7 GPA to get into the program he wants. He is first semester freshman right now, and has a 1.75 GPA... I can only hope that he will decide for himself that HE has the choice to do his best, he is the one in control and will start making decisions that benefit himself I can't help but hope that a trial of Ritalin might be the answer... Without hope...

tridlette , I sure hope it helps. At least he is old enough to be able to work with you- my son is 10 right now and there is so much he doesn't understand about what is going on in his life- that it makes it so hard. Right now he is on homebound school. School was a major part of our situation. Grownups and peers can be so cruel that their self esteem just goes right down to nothing. I hope that once we get the meds right - some behavior mod and therapy will help pick him up again.

Good luck to both of you, I heard a thing on the news and I wasn't going to put it on here originally, but when you were describing what the feelings were, it sort of wanted me ot be able to. If I can find a link to the story I will, BUT anyhow. There was apparently a new treand amongst some that were taking Adderal XR to help get them into law school adn such. It was on ABC Worldnews at 6:30 Eastern time. Anyhow, it struck me because the boy said that when he was done studying for what ever it was, he felt like he needed to stay on it to keep up his schedule adn to keep advancing. here it is. I am putting it here in hopes that it might be able to help understand what the kids are feeling, not to be controversial. abcnews.go.com/WNT/News/story?id=254123&page=1

Franksmom,
I too thought that my ds7 was ODD - she was on Adderall XR15mg - totally out of control and terribly short fuse. When I talked to her doc after reading some of the other posts here, he thought it was the Adderall, changed her to Concerta and BOY WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!! I no longer think she is ODD - turns out the Adderall was causing all that behavior. I now have a sweet, loving child (although we still have issues, dont get me wrong) with none of those "Hulk" moments.
Was he aggitated and short fused when not on the Adderall? Talk to your doctor - you may need to change meds.

My son was grouchy and moody on Adderall XR too..Cried etc.. had that bad time at the end of the day when it was wearing off..
I would try Concerta.. it seems that that is one that smooths moods somewhat..
But Strattera has an antidepressant quality.. so who knows.. It flat out didn't work for my son so we are off all together..
I hope you got my message about school..
Keep us posted@!!!! Denise

Well- we saw the doc today and he has stopped the adderall XR. He says that the stimulants are making the anger worse. He has increased the Seroquel and we are going to just use that for a while. He thinks we may be dealing with bipolar as well as the adhd. Only time will tell- once these meds start working. I cancelled the homebound teacher yesterday- it was to much! She cancelled us for today due to teacher conferences.A small gift I am greatful for! Ill keep you posted on our progress.

I hope things go well for you. I had the opposite problem with my DS14. The adderall and Adderall XR were great, but when he hit puberty, it went down hill. We tried concerta, and that was even worse for us. Anger problems, mouthing off, depression. We went off meds for a while, then tried strattera. Worked great for his anger and depression, but was no good for attention. After a year of other meds we went back to Adderall xr and increased the dose. He is doing great now, but going thru the start of puberty was horrible. My DD is 11 now (no adhd) and is starting. Here I go again. Some kids who do well on adderall do not do well on concerta, and some who do well on concerta do not do well on adderall.
